Oversized National Geographic tee with paint splatters, slouchy front tuck into the skirt 🧡💞 Fun fact* I collect and study National Geographic magazines, so far over 700 books. I use them to ‘mentally travel’ the globe but also to research the methods and role of print/visual media. Visual media has a long history of reinforcing and creating racial stereotypes, contributing to racism and shaping public perception. From early photographs and cartoons to modern film, television, and advertising, these mediums have often depicted minorities negatively, with impacts that continue to be felt today.  Photography emerged as a tool to “scientifically” document and visualize racial differences, despite being rooted in flawed and racist assumptions. In 2018, National Geographic publicly acknowledged that its past coverage was racist and perpetuated stereotypes about people of color. This was done as part of a special issue dedicated to exploring race, where the magazine examined its own 130-year archive.  National Geographic wasn’t teaching as much as reinforcing messages they already received and doing so in a magazine that had tremendous authority. National Geographic comes into existence at the height of colonialism, and the world was divided into the colonizers and the colonized. It’s like I can acknowledge the strengths of National Geographic, the fact that it takes people out into the world to see things they’ve never seen before but while this magazine can open people’s eyes at the same time it closes them. Like all visual language, the message is in the viewers mind but not without the influence of the artist/photographers perspective.
