After much indecision about where to live and various challenges and choices in love, these last weeks have seen a lot of change and it doesn’t seem like I’m the only one?! These birds and brush tools keep making their way to my copper plates and glass studies recently. It’s like I’m emerging from Winter stillness and the sticky decisions are opening up and flying to somewhere new. (Including my new stained glass piece which I’ll complete these coming weeks!) This new heron plate I’ll show completed later this week. I wanted to make it this time last year when similar things were coming up while I was in Japan and I was struggling to know how to land with some big decisions then too. Using my new favourite @m_coulanges etching tool on hard ground copper plate before etching in the acid bath and printing on my Victorian star wheel printing press! #etching #printmaking #drawing #intaglio

And that's lift off 🚀 There's nothing like pulling a giant woodcut off a block • This is The Fool, the eighth and final figure in my 13-year long Carrying Things From Home series • I spent 7 months carving this woodcut by hand, and one month dying and cutting the papers that color it. My team of three people and I spent the best two weeks creating 18 of them, all by hand from start to finish. Anthotype (sun printing with turmeric) This past weekend I went down a bit of a rabbit hole experimenting with anthotype printing basically using sunlight and natural pigments (in this case, turmeric) to make prints. 🌞🌿 This wasn’t so much a “how-to” as it was me just trying something out and seeing what would happen. The video shows the whole process from start to finish, just an experiment with sun printing and patience. Honestly, my prints didn’t come out as vibrant as I was hoping. I’m guessing they needed more time in the sun, so that’s something I’d play around with next time. That’s kind of the fun of it though figuring it out as you go. I like how simple and unpredictable this process is, similar to cyanotype. It feels a bit like letting nature collaborate with you, even if the results aren’t perfect yet. We are now in the final week of this month’s newsletter, which focuses on the daffodil and the dove. It includes a booklet with illustrations, poetry and folklore, along with a digital daffodil print to download. Here in Cornwall, daffodils have been in flower since December in commercial fields, and many are now beginning to die back so I am printing them to try to hold on to them for just a little longer… They are widely understood as symbols of rebirth, vitality and new beginnings, but also of inspiration, forgiveness and creativity. In China, a daffodil blooming on the first day of the new year is thought to bring wealth and good fortune for the year ahead. There are also more practical associations. A compound called galantamine, found in daffodils, is used in modern medicine to help slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease a reminder that these very familiar plants still have relevance beyond the ornamental. In folklore, a single daffodil is sometimes thought to bring misfortune, so they are traditionally given in bunches. They are also associated with the celebration of a 10th wedding anniversary. Daffodils (Narcissus) have a long cultural and symbolic history. Their name comes from the Greek myth of Narcissus, who fell in love with his own reflection. Because of this, they are often associated with reflection as well as renewal, marking the shift into spring and the start of a new cycle.
