ARThe City of Tucson hosted a public meeting to share information on Project Blue with the community.
Hundreds gathered at Mica Mountain High School on Wednesday evening, and many voiced opposition or support for Project Blue. Several community members commented on environmental and public health concerns, projected jobs and economic benefits, and requests for developer transparency.
Representatives of Project Blue, the City of Tucson, Pima County, Tucson Water, TEP, and the Pima County Dept of Environmental Quality presented and addressed questions.
The meeting discussed info on the proposed project, like its data center, water and energy use, and employment.
Another community meeting is expected next week.

NOIf TEP is going to take our money, they need to listen to what we want. And WE DON’T WANT PROJECT BLUE. Pima County residents keep coming together against this project because it’s an awful idea.
But TEP doesn’t care what we want. Which is why we showed up at their door last week… and it’s why we’re showing up at the Arizona Corporation Commission meeting TOMORROW (9 am, 1200 W Washington St, Phoenix).
TEP has gotten way too comfortable in our community and something has to change.

Amazon tried to build a massive, water-consuming data center out in Arizona, called Project Blue. After widespread public outrage, Tucson’s city council unanimously killed it.
This is a huge victory for the people of Tucson.
By organizing and mobilizing, residents were able to stand up against Big Tech and shut down a project that would’ve harmed their community.

THIn a unanimous 7-0 vote Wednesday, the Tucson City Council canceled a controversial land deal that would have annexed 290 acres of land to Amazon-linked Beale Infrastructure for a new $3.6 billion data center.
The vote came after weeks of growing backlash from local residents, environmental advocates, and labor organizers, many of whom packed the chambers to urge the council to vote “no.” The final decision was met with cheers from the crowd.
Supporters said “Project Blue” would have brought jobs and economic growth to Tucson. The proposal included a “net water positive” plan, meaning the developer pledged to replenish more water than the project would use by investing in reclaimed-water infrastructure. Opponents argued that — even with this plan — the data center could strain water resources in a desert city already facing significant climate challenges such as drought. They also criticized the project for prioritizing corporate interests over community needs, and for a lack of transparency throughout the process.
Beale Infrastructure in a statement called the decision “a missed opportunity for the city.”
City officials say they’ll instead draft new ordinances around data center development, including stronger guidelines for water use, infrastructure, and public transparency.
