NIGabe is nonspeaking and autistic. He communicates with an AAC device as well as eye contact, body language, and physical touch. He has the ability to reach into your soul with a look. He is about to turn 12 next week! Last year during the pandemic Gabe stopped going to school and started spending a lot of time out in nature which I believe ignited something inside of him. It was around his birthday last June when we noticed him humming a lot more. Caroline had a great idea to get him a keyboard with a microphone as a gift. He had never used one before, but immediately picked it up and said the words “I’ll do it” and belted out his favorite song by @officialqueenmusic Another One Bites The Dust! Freddie Mercury would be so proud! We were shocked and I can honestly say the best things in my life happened in 2020. I beat cancer and my son discovered his voice. JUIt’s time for Proloquo!
No, not Proloquo2Go. This is @assistiveware’s new app, Proloquo!
If you have Proloquo2Go, it seems like there’s a free trial version of Proloquo you can try. I saw the option for it, and figured I would investigate it. 😄
Proloquo is based on core words, and uses motor planning/memory. That means words stay in the same place, which makes it easier to use the more you practice! The vocabulary is quite robust, which is good. It also has a keyboard too.
On the right side of the screen, it also shows words that are related to whatever you selected - as well as the different grammar forms. The predictive/related words is a feature I really love, especially with my aphasia.
I also love the ability to turn on dark mode, which is good for migraines and post-TBI processing in general. For other apps I use, I have to customize them to create my own dark mode (although Proloquo4Text does have a decent dark mode option).
It’s important to note that the home grid size for Proloquo cannot be changed. It’s fixed to have 48 symbol buttons, along with 12 text buttons. It didn’t feel overwhelming to me, which was nice.
The program is also subscription-based, instead of a one-time cost. From what I’ve read, there are monthly and yearly options. While that may be a more affordable option for some people compared to other apps, others may find it expensive.
It’s a new app though, so things might be changed or added over time.
All of that said: one of the things I like the best about Proloquo is that it’s got a companion app (Proloquo Coach). It can be super helpful for people who are helping a child learn to use AAC, and give families more confidence with the program. A big part of AAC is modeling words, practicing, and playing around/investigating - and the companion app may help a lot with supporting that.

With so many different options; we really are able to meet kids where they are. Not only does AAC alleviate some frustration of communication, but models the language to encourage verbal output. Simple 1-word utterances can be expanded into detailed sentences. Yes/no responses can be encouraged without the verbal models. The possibilities of AAC are endless!

TEPOV: When your student flushes his communication symbol down the toilet for the third time this week 😭🚽

Yup, true story.

I had a student who would literally flush his PECS symbols at home AND at school, anytime it was a symbol he didn’t like.
.
Didn’t want to go for a walk? FLUSH. 🚽
No to brushing teeth? FLUSH. 🚽
The symbol didn’t stand a chance. 😂
.
It became this very clear communication of “absolutely not” which, let’s be honest, was kind of brilliant in its own way. But also… we were running out of laminated cards fast. 💀
.
So we worked really closely with his amazing family and decided to transition him to Proloquo and honestly? BEST. DECISION. EVER. 🙌
.
It gave him so much more control over his communication (and saved us from replacing 400 toilet-bound visuals weekly). Win-win!
