Man is merely the caretaker of the land that maintains his life and nourishes his soul. Therefore, the ʻāina is sacred.” Alohai lā hānau iā George Jarrett Helm Jr. - a gifted leader, musician, cultural practitioner, and kiaʻi of the land. Born on March 23, 1950 in Kalamaʻula, Molokaʻi, Helm’s leadership and mele helped awaken a renewed sense of kuleana to ʻāina and culture to Hawaiians during a pivotal time in our history. “Kuʻu Pua I Paoakalani,” written by Queen Liliʻuokalani during her imprisonment after the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom, expresses deep love for her people and homeland. Helm’s rendition carries that same emotion, showing how mele preserve history and manaʻo across generations. In the mid-1970s, Helm became a key voice against the bombing of Kahoʻolawe, working with Hui Alaloa and the Protect @kahoolawe ʻOhana. In 1976, he and 8 others landed on the island in protest, igniting a broader movement for its protection and restoration. On March 5, 1977, Helm, Kimo Mitchell, and Billy Mitchell set out to reach activists on Kahoʻolawe but learned they had already been rescued. Stranded without a return, they faced rough seas. Billy turned back and survived, while Helm and Kimo were last seen near Molokini and never found. Though his life was brief, George Helm’s impact continues to resonate through the music he shared, the movement he helped strengthen, and the generations that followed. His legacy lives on through his ʻohana, including artists and cultural leaders such as @raiateamusic, @mapulehu_farms, and @mistah83, and through all who continue to carry forward the values of Aloha ʻĀina. This video features George performing alongside the late Aaron Mahi and Martin Pahinui as The Waialea Trio. Together, they deliver a beautiful, soulful rendition of "Ka Moa'e," a classic Hawaiian song originally written by Solomon Hiram.
