RO🎸🇮🇱 🎤 In 1975, when the members of the band first entered a professional studio to record their debut album, they were convinced they were on the verge of the European stage. This was no adolescent illusion: they had managed to catch the attention of representatives from the British label Decca, one of the giants of the era, which distributed major artists across Europe.
For a band from 1970s Israel—where progressive rock was in its infancy and the music market was tiny—this was a giant leap. They recorded in English specifically for international airplay, imagining European tours, reviews in the British press, and perhaps even an official launch in London.
The album was titled Peace, and the name was no coincidence. The band members were young men who had lived through the immediate aftermath of the 1973 Yom Kippur War; some had been mobilized, and all were scarred by the tension of those days.
Their music—complex, featuring long electric violin passages, elaborate keyboards, and sudden rhythmic shifts—was influenced by British prog-rock giants, yet the themes remained deeply personal: war, hope, and the fragility of a generation. This was not a pop album with simple choruses; it was an ambitious construction, with tracks that defied the standard radio song structure.
In those years, there were few paths for a progressive group from such a small country to reach a wide audience, especially when their music relied on long, intricate structures and a blend of influences reminiscent of Yes, Gentle Giant, or the Canterbury scene—hardly something easy to "sell." After months of work, the band sent the tapes for final approval.
The response was cold and pragmatic: the music was deemed too complicated for mass promotion, and the album was "too difficult to digest" for the general public. The record label declined to invest in a European tour and withdrew support for an international release.
For the band members, the news was devastating. It wasn't just a commercial rejection; it was the collapse of a life plan.
