We talked about how she set up her practice as a carver after studying at the City & Guilds of London Art School, and what networks and resources have helped her along the way. We also talked about the traditional training she received there, and how she believes carvers need to embrace new technology so they can stay competitive whilst taking their craft to the next level. Thank you Clunie for taking part, I really enjoyed hearing about the full process from drawing proposals, to making a maquette and then onto the final form - with so many options for the final material and finish! It is also great to hear about the ways in which you are trying to innovate by harnessing the latest technology, especially with how that relates to learning opportunities for others. I want to thank them for their hard work - full days and not so much cake but completely worth it👏 These coffins are packed with different techniques and skills from plait borders to cordage loops & clasps. No matter where I go, I’m drawn to art, literature, and calligraphy that speaks of the moon. I feel an inner energy emanating from it, while the shadows cast by every object blur. Translating this hazy vision into my own interpretation is both the hardest and most fun part of my journey. The materials I work with each sing their own song, and though my skills are still growing, I learn by immersing myself in each experience, allowing the material to guide me. My QEST Scholarship has allowed me to explore the alchemy of natural colour; creating sustainable, botanical oil-based inks from plants and earth pigments. This journey has expanded my practice and deepened my understanding of craft as both an ancient language and a living, evolving art. QEST has supported almost 900 craftspeople across the UK, nurturing skill, imagination and innovation. Their new Investing in the Future of Craft campaign celebrates this legacy and looks ahead, inviting us all to share stories of making, to bid in their anniversary auction, or to donate £35 to help the next generation of makers flourish. Following on from an earlier post of @christophermcevoy handweaving this cloth, here’s the setup and stitching of the box pleat kilt in the making. It’s the first of a capsule collection we’ll jointly be presenting (with @cavanjayne and @scotredesign) at the Maison d’Exceptions in Paris next month. This annual event offers a platform for 20 artisans around the globe to showcase their innovative and/or ancestral skills to an invited audience…. and this is the first time that Scotland’s textile traditions will be represented by our trio of heritage crafts: promoting natural dye applications, handwoven textiles and trimmings and handstitched kiltmaking, through imaginatively re-sequencing the methods of each maker. Gratefully supported by my @qestcraft Clothworkers Company scholarship.
