The overall efficiency or the external quantum efficiency of optoelectronic devices such as light emitting diodes (LED) depends on the internal quantum efficiency and the light extraction efficiency. The internal quantum efficiency or the quantum yield of emission in an electro-luminescence process is optimized by forming heterogeneous p-n junctions and carefully designing multi-quantum๏ฟฝwell (MQW) structures to control the recombination rate of the carriers.
