This fridge can cool to temperatures below -273.14 °C, surpassing the icy lows of outer space (-270.45°C), and even reaching only a few thousandths of a degree above absolute zero. Why the need for such extreme cold? Some quantum effects only appear at temperatures near absolute zero–the lowest temperature possible, where particles have no motion and no heat. This is especially useful in generating ultra-cold qubits–the basic units of quantum information needed in quantum computing. But how does a dilution refrigerator work? And what does dilution have to do with ultra-cold temperatures? This all depends on the special properties of helium and its two isotopes, He-3 and He-4. Helium does not solidify at ultra-cold temperatures but condenses into a liquid and He-3 and He-4 can remain in a homogeneous mixture down to the lowest temperatures.
