CH🇨🇳 Beijing is set to host a human vs. robot half-marathon, as new test runs show just how quickly humanoid robots are improving.
📍 On April 19 at 7:30am, more than 300 humanoid robots from 26 companies will run the 21.1km course alongside around 12,000 human participants in Beijing’s E-Town.
The route spans city roads, racetrack sections and park terrain, designed to test performance in real conditions.
⚡ The progress over one year is quite impressive: In April 2025, a leading humanoid robot completed a half-marathon in 2 hours 40 minutes. By April 2026, a robot called “Lightning” finished the same distance in under 54 minutes, reflecting major gains in speed, stability and navigation.
🧠 Beyond the race, the event serves as a benchmark for real-world capability. Long-distance running pushes limits in balance, energy management and environmental awareness, all key areas for applications like disaster response, industrial inspection and logistics.

During a recent visit to Hangzhou, hosted by the Zhejiang Provincial Government, we witnessed a live balance and stability demonstration from the Unitree G1 humanoid robot by @unitreerobotics.
The robot was repeatedly pushed, kicked, and forced off center, yet it continuously recovered its posture in real time. What looks simple on the surface is actually one of the hardest problems in robotics.
Every recovery requires multiple systems working together at once:
• Motion control calculating body adjustments instantly
• Sensors tracking force, movement, and orientation
• AI perception predicting instability before a fall happens
• Hardware responding with precise joint coordination in milliseconds
Humans do this naturally. Robots have to compute every step.
Balance is not just about standing upright anymore. It is about creating machines that can adapt to unpredictable real world environments without losing control.

NEChinese robotics startup UniX AI has launched a new home service robot, with prices starting at around ¥88,000 (roughly £9,000/ $12,000).
The robot, part of its Wanda series, is designed to assist with everyday household tasks. In demos, it can fold clothes, clean, cook simple meals like fried eggs, control appliances, and organise items around the home.
It combines several in-house AI systems, including imitation learning, vision and touch sensing, and task planning, allowing it to handle objects with high precision and complete multi-step actions. The robot is also equipped with dual arms, an omni-directional base for tight indoor spaces, and a battery life of up to 16 hours depending on the model.
While marketed for home use, the technology is still in an early stage. Current deployments are more commonly seen in controlled environments such as hotels, retail, and service settings, rather than fully autonomous use in everyday households.
