RPE stands for Rating of Perceived Exertion, which is a scoring system from 1 to 10, where - RPE 10 is training to absolute failure RPE 9 is training very hard but you possibly have 1 rep in reserve RPE 8 is still hard, but not as hard and possibly 2 reps in reserve and so on RIR stands for Repetitions in Reserve. A frequent question that I am asked is whether I use these OR if I use percentages when I create a program, and the answer is that I use ALL of these tools. RPE is subjective, and humans aren’t very good at predicting RIR. So are these tools valuable? My answer is, yes, absolutely! Although these aren’t perfect, they can be used to help us communicate how much effort we should apply to our sessions, especially when we can’t precisely determine exactly how heavy we are able to lift on a given day. Except when someone else does it 😝 Tomorrow I’m going to have a live discussion with someone who I consider to be one of the most knowledgeable academics in the field of sports science @helms3dmj I am going to deep dive into his thoughts on the topic of training to fail vs leaving reps in reserve. Something that many people don’t consider is that there isn’t a black and white answer. There are several benefits to training to fail, if done correctly, just as there are several benefits to leaving reps in reserve.
