After escaping violence in the 1970s, Jeanette dedicated her life to protecting animals in need as an RSPCA Inspector. She changed countless lives, not just through the animals she rescued, but through the people she inspired. Her daughter Tania grew up watching her mum calm the “unhandleable,” rescue the forgotten and stand up for those without a voice. Now, that same compassion lives on through Tania’s son, Mason, who volunteers with RSPCA SA today. Three generations. One shared belief: animals deserve kindness. This is how RSPCA SA has grown for more than 150 years, through people who show up, care deeply and pass that care on. Today, we’re proud to launch something special. We’ve teamed up with @init_creative to give animals like Diego the chance to tell their story. Not long ago, Diego arrived at our Animal Care Centre weighing just 1.4kg at eight years old. He was frightened, malnourished and unsure if food would ever come again. With patience, expert care, and lots of small meals, our team helped him heal — physically and emotionally. This is the first of many stories from the cats and dogs our incredible staff and volunteers help every single day before they find their happy ever after. Inspectorate Update: 37 animals seized from serial offender. Our Inspectors have seized a total of 13 horses and 24 cats from an Ararat property today. This seizure is the fourth time this individual has allegedly breached a court order regarding the number of animals in their care. RSPCA Victoria has now removed over 400 animals from this repeat animal cruelty offender over the last decade. The animals were found in poor living conditions and were taken to an RSPCA Victoria shelter for assessment and any required veterinary care. SRR response to one of our followers 🌾 I completely agree with you, the rising cost of veterinary care has become absolutely out of control, and it is affecting every rescue across Australia. Your idea is honestly a fantastic one, and if rescues could come together to build or fund a vet clinic that could operate at cost price or wholesale rates, it would save thousands of lives. That being said, we are also very lucky that our vets are still mainly family-run, and they have supported us for years with huge discounts, compassion, and understanding. Without them, we genuinely wouldn’t still be operating. But yes, if someone ever wanted to purchase or sponsor a vet clinic for rescue organisations, or invest in something like that for our rescue specifically… we would be 100% supportive of it, because it would be life-changing for the animals. Thank you again for caring enough to think outside the box. We need more people with this mindset. 🙏🐾 If you want, I can make a shorter version too (more punchy for Facebook).

RSPCA WA has issued a serious warning following a Perth Magistrates Court conviction involving abuse and threats against an inspector investigating animal cruelty. Let’s be clear: no one enforcing animal welfare laws should face intimidation, threats or violence for doing their job. In this case, a five-month-old puppy was left with an untreated broken leg despite veterinary advice that urgent x-rays were required. When inspectors returned to follow up, they were met with aggression, abuse and threats. That is not just disgraceful. It’s unlawful. Under section 77 of the Animal Welfare Act 2002 (WA), hindering, obstructing, abusing or threatening an inspector carries penalties of up to $20,000 and one year in prison. Two people have already been convicted under this section this financial year, with more cases before the courts. Inspectors are trained professionals enforcing the law on behalf of animals who cannot speak for themselves. While most interactions are respectful, threats and intimidation are not rare. But they must never be normalised. If you witness or suspect animal cruelty, report it to RSPCA WA on 1300 CRUELTY (1300 278 358) or at rspcawa.org.au.

This is what unity in the animal welfare sector looks like. Coordinated outreach. Shared resources. A collective commitment to sterilisation as the most effective way to reduce the number of neglected stray and unwanted animals entering an already overburdened welfare system. Every month, an average of 2 300 unwanted and stray animals arrive at the SPCA. Approximately 69% are animals people no longer want. Last year, 451 animals were surrendered simply because they “would not stop having puppies or kittens”. An onsite pet owner survey showed 60.4 percent of pets were acquired through informal breeding or private exchanges. Most through digital channels and others from acquaintances or community litters. None were sterilised at the time of acquisition, and few households had planned for the long-term cost of care or veterinary treatment. When welfare organisations work together, prevention reaches further into communities, pressure on the system begins to ease, and fewer animals are born into circumstances that place them at risk.
