PEUranium was all the craze from the 1920s to 50s. It was used to glaze plates, make glass, make false teeth look naturally luminescent, and put in drinking water to give people a "healthy glow". Marie Curie even kept a vial by her bed as a nightlight.
Now we know that radiation is bad and could potentially end the world if used by the wrong people with the right gusto :)
But isn't the world already ending? We're spinning in a wheel like cogs in a machine we don't understand, run by people who don't know us and who we wouldn't want to know.

LA☢️The 1986 Sarcophagus (“Object Shelter”)☢️
Built in just 6 months after the explosion, the original 1986 sarcophagus - officially called “Object Shelter” - was constructed under extreme radiation, with many workers allowed only minutes per shift on the roof.
It was never meant to be permanent: engineers knew from day one it was a temporary emergency structure.
Deep inside lies the infamous “Elephant’s Foot” - a mass of corium formed when nuclear fuel, sand, concrete, and metal melted together during the explosion.
When it was discovered in 1986, it was so radioactive that standing near it for minutes meant a fatal dose.
Today its radiation has significantly decreased, but it remains one of the most dangerous and unique materials ever created by a nuclear disaster.
On top of that, 200 tons of radioactive fuel remain entombed within the ruins. The reactions are no longer explosive, but slow nuclear processes still occur at a microscopic level...

Back when I was working at @TRIUMF, one of the coolest things (in my opinion) was the fact that I had to wear a dosimeter whenever I entered the main site — so obviously I started taking pics when it happened. A dosimeter tracks how much radiation you’ve been exposed to, to make sure you stay below safe limits. We also had to walk through a detector when leaving the site to check that we weren’t contaminated!
Whilst that might sound scary, it’s good to remember that there’s actually a lot of radioactivity in the world around us (bananas and Brazil nuts are both radioactive, as is brick and cement). There’s a lot of scary press about radioactivity, but in small doses it’s totally fine. Like many things, it’s the dose that dangerous!
I am definitely missing the excitement of working on site, and getting to physically be involved with the experiment, but I do also love the software side (and being home!). It’s very cool that I’ve been able to have a taste of lots of different aspects of particle physics!
