MIJust discovered this beautiful coffee table book that covers the life and work of #rajiecook. ⚠️ This is a great example of how the US uses the labor of Palestinians while dehumanizing Palestinians & funding their displacement, apartheid, occupation, ethnic c l e a n s i n g & g e n o c i d e.
Roger Cook / Rajie Cook was a Palestinian artist 🎨 born in 1930 in Newark to Najeeb Esa Suleiman & Jaleele (Totah) Cook. He died at the age of 90 in 2021. His family roots are Palestinian Christian from Ramallah in the West Bank. Rajie learned through his journey of reconnecting to his family's history that his grandfather's last name was Suleiman. "Cook" was the British colonizer imposed name on his family.
Rajie Suleiman & Don Shanosky were tasked by the US Department of Transportation and AIGA to create universal wayfinding symbols. Together they created minimalist, universal, inclusive symbols. Their research looked at the semantic, syntactic & pragmatic. They wanted these images to be understood across cultures, ages, & to be inclusive of people with disabilities.
Both Rajie & Don were awarded a presidential award by US President Ronald Reagan in 1985 for "outstanding achievement in design for the government of the USA".
🪧Here we're reminded of the cultural humility we want to enter into 2024 with. This is the type of humility where we recognize the ways in which our systems exploit & tokenize. Tokenism is a white supremacist tool of control & it doesn't allow us to value people for who they really are, in connection to the fullness of who they are.
🕊️ Here we offer an intention to continue to deconstruct & do our due diligence to decolonize our knowledge of occupied-Palestine & of the ways in which we haven't honored Palestinian contributions in this world.

While searching for references for this project, I came across a New York Times front page showing the photos of more than 64 children killed in Palestine. In 2021.
Typically my work isn’t political. It’s hardly even meaningful. The process of creating this piece - using the references of children killed two years ago - was difficult. Even heartbreaking at times. “They were only children” was the article’s headline. This line would often come back to me as a mantra. I was doing small portraits of children. Happy. Smiling at their photographers - mothers, fathers, siblings, friends. I intentionally left them in this state. We get to see the faces of tragedy all too often, but we almost never get to see the faces of *Palestinian* tragedy.
You may observe this as a representation of happy children. Which it is. This is what is gone.
