Let's build an @efforg #rayhunter using an Orbic RC400L hotspot to look for spooks using Stingrays, IMSI-Catchers and Cellular Site Simulators. Increasingly, controversial cellular spying has been caught near protests, rallies and high crime areas. The purpose of this project is to crowd-source data to help privacy experts better understand how, when and where these techniques are used against citizens. Thanks to @ug_comms for buying a bunch of used hotspots and sending a few my way for testing.

From protesters to civilians, everyone is being surveilled. Today, we speak with @efforg’s Cooper Quintin about IMSI-catchers, or stingrays, which mimic cell towers and are used by law enforcement to track phones. Quintin is one of the people behind Rayhunter, an easy to install tool that can detect nearby IMSI-catchers. This tech, sometimes known as Stingrays, poses as a fake cellphone tower to track a phone’s location, intercept calls and texts, and can sometimes even deliver malware. I can’t let an account deletion slow me down, there are projects to make 🦾🦾🦾 fresh batch of RayHunters will be available soon on hackedexistence.com Rayhunter refers to an open-source tool developed by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) designed to detect cell-site simulators, also known as IMSI catchers or Stingrays. Here’s a breakdown of what Rayhunter is and how it works: Purpose: To empower individuals, regardless of technical skill, to detect the presence of cell-site simulators used for surveillance. How it Works: Rayhunter runs on an affordable mobile hotspot (specifically, an Orbic RC400L) and analyzes the control traffic between the hotspot and nearby cell towers. Detection Method: It looks for suspicious events in the network traffic, such as requests to downgrade the connection to less secure 2G standards or suspicious requests for the device’s IMSI (International Mobile Subscriber Identity). Alerts: If suspicious activity is detected, Rayhunter provides a visual alert (the status line on the hotspot’s screen turns red) and logs the events for further analysis. Benefits: It provides a more affordable and accessible way to detect cell-site simulators compared to previous methods, which often required expensive equipment or modified devices. Goals: The EFF’s goals with Rayhunter include gathering empirical data about the usage and capabilities of cell-site simulators, determining if they are used to surveil protected activities like protests, and informing the development of better defenses against these devices. In essence, Rayhunter acts as a “Stingray detector,” helping individuals understand if they are potentially being targeted by this type of cellular surveillance. #wifi #eff #electronicfreedomfoundation #rayhunter #sigint #signal #cybersecurity #cybersecurityawareness #hacktheplanet

Problem: Stingray devices pretend to be real cell towers. When your phone connects to one, Stingray can spy on your location and sometimes your calls or texts. Solution: Rayhunter helps spot when that’s happening. How it does it: 1. You run Rayhunter on a cheap little 4G hotspot (about $20). 2. The hotspot normally talks to real cell towers. Rayhunter watches the control signals in that traffic (not your browsing or personal data). 3. If the “cell tower” starts doing suspicious things — like forcing your connection down to insecure 2G, or asking for your IMSI (your SIM card’s unique ID) in odd ways — Rayhunter flags it. 4. When that happens, the hotspot screen turns red to warn you. 5. You can then save the logs, which show evidence that a Stingray might be nearby.
