You see glimpses of who they can be and fall in love with that future version rather than accepting who they are right now. Your attraction to broken but brilliant people comes from childhood patterns where love meant rescuing, fixing, or being useful to someone struggling. If you had a parent who was talented but troubled, charismatic but unstable, or full of potential but never quite reaching it, your nervous system learned to associate that specific combination of brilliance and brokenness with love and connection. You developed the belief that your purpose in relationships is to help someone become their best self, making their potential your project and their healing your responsibility. Now you're drawn to people who have incredible qualities alongside serious issues because that dynamic feels like home to your nervous system. The problem isn't that these people have struggles, it's that you're trying to love them into wholeness while neglecting your own needs and boundaries.
