GOplastic does NOT mean recyclable.
I don’t know how many times I’ve had to correct well-meaning people about recycling plastic.
and it’s not something I blame them for either, this is the rhetoric that has been around for decades - “who cares, recycle it!”
unfortunately, due to too much regulatory flexibility, the fossil fuel industry and its lobbyists, as well as the crooked politicians that take their money, we have SO MANY kinds of plastics literally floating around us.
recycling is an energy-intensive process to begin with, which is why we should always strive to REDUCE + REUSE *before* recycling…
and it’s great for aluminum (infinitely recyclable), glass, and paper.
plastics are petroleum-based, but when manufacturers can make more money with cheaper packaging, a mix of different chemicals can be added to the already carcinogenic, petroleum-based plastics, you get different kinds of plastics.
understandably, most recycling facilities cannot recycle all these kinds of plastics.
the best thing you and I can do is to be conscious about the type of packaging we’re buying and using.
opt for zero waste when possible, like bringing your own container to refill/bulk shops, making things at home
or choosing more recycle-friendly packaging like aluminum, glass, or paper when possible.
make sure to always check your local guidelines for your recycling protocol!

GLI’m sorry this is what some people sound like when recycling comes up in conversation. YES recycling can be a little complex and nuanced. Every region and even city can handle things differently. That doesn’t mean recycling is a scam everywhere… and it certainly doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try to build recycling systems. Using recyclable materials is almost always better than mining virgin materials from the earth. Circular economy over linear economy all dayyyyyy
