Like any hospital, a wildlife hospital is full of joy and sadness in equal parts. We see so much loss, but each day is full of little wins, too! 💕 One such win was a morning check-in with this beautiful Red-tailed Hawk. She came in after a vehicle strike, clearly dazed, neurological, and in pain, but still standing upright. With no palpable or visible skeletal breaks, blunt force head trauma was our main problem. She showed marginal improvement with supportive care, but two days later she still was not eating the food we offered. This meant that we had to gavage liquid food into her belly, which isn't fun for anyone involved! The morning of day four, however, she seemed slightly more reactive! Our staff decided to try tong feeding her some tasty squirrel bites before attempting to gavage again. And she took it... Then she took more! 😍 One step closer to self-feeding like she should! These little wins are baby steps toward healing and release for our patients, and each time it reminds us why we do what we do. We're rooting for you, pretty Red-Tail! Another release that reaffirms our passion for wildlife rehabilitation! This juvenile Red-tailed Hawk was admitted in March after being grazed by a car and found lying on the side of the highway. Luckily, the bird had no fractures or injuries other than a minor abrasion to the cornea. After spending some time in an outdoor flight cage, it was clear this patient was eating, flying, and behaving extremely well. When appropriate and possible, we love to reach out to a patient's finder, asking if they are interested in releasing the animal back into its home. This finder was ecstatic to be involved in this full-circle moment! The Red-tailed Hawk was released into a wooded area near where it was found this week. We are so grateful to members of the public who are so compassionate for our native wildlife and seek help for those in distress! 🐦‍⬛ It’s Meet the Beak Monday! 🙌🏻 Every Monday we feature some of our amazing feathered friends that reside at our centre 🎉 Today we are meeting Andy! Andy is a stunning 8-year-old Red-tailed Hawk! This lovely lady is a frequent flier at our centre, often being spotted during our “Hawk Talks”. Not only is she a star educator, but she is also amazing at wildlife management! Andy has worked with us at various waste management facilities, helping keep the skies safe and clear from gulls and other birds. At these sites, gulls can pose a safety risk and health hazard to themselves, the workers and public. A bird like Andy soaring the skies keeps the gulls away and everyone safe! 🌞 #islandraptors #redtailedhawk
