BRFlorida State Representative Angie Nixon disrupted a House special session this week shouting into a bullhorn that the new redistricting plan is unconstitutional.
“As Gov. Ron DeSantis and our legislative body push illegal, rigged legislative maps, Floridians are clear that politics as usual is unsustainable. Democracy is falling. The Voting Rights Act is gutted, the voice of the people is ignored and gerrymandering is advanced, and other leaders are offering platitudes," Nixon wrote on social media.
“We can’t keep electing the same kinds of people – people who serve themselves instead of the people who put them in office in the first place. They are acting in bad faith and violating the law, yet there is no accountability," the representative said.

LETenn. signs a new congressional map into law that now changes the state’s political dynamic. This new map splits up the predominately Black district in Memphis into three parts that extend as far out as 200 miles away. It also shakes up parts of Davidson County meaning some lawmakers have been shuffled in and out of districts. Republican lawmakers said they spread votes from the last remaining Democratic district in Memphis, so they could make it easier to claim one more congressional seat for President Trump, but opponents say these tactics were designed to disenfranchise Black and brown voters.
Lawsuits have been filed by the NAACP and others, that could tie this map up in courts before the midterms. In the meantime, some suspect this map could have the unexpected consequence of making these congressional races much more competitive than they were expected to be. What do you think?

CSHouse Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) praised the Supreme Court’s decision last week in Louisana v. Callais that ruled states did not have to create majority-minority districts to satisfy section 2 of the Voting Rights Act.
“The Court restored a simple but profound truth,” Speaker Johnson said at a Wednesday press conference with House GOP leadership. “The Constitution protects every American equally.”
The Callais decision split the court 6-3 along ideological lines, with liberal justices dissenting, arguing it overturned decades of precedent and would disenfranchise Black minority communities that vote Democratic in the South. Democrats have condemned the decision, while Republicans have hailed it as a victory. State legislatures in Tennessee, Louisiana, and Alabama have moved quickly to pass new maps that erase the seats of Black Democratic representatives in majority-minority districts.
“Democrats spent decades trying to engineer electoral maps that divided Americans,” Speaker Johnson said. “This decision from the Supreme Court hopefully ends that terrible practice once and for all.”
