Every season, I plant a cover crop. I let it grow lush & full to build biomass both above and below ground. Instead of tilling it in, I crimp it down by foot as see in the video OR another option is using a roller crimper. This terminates the crop without disturbing the soil structure. After crimping, I tarp the area for a few weeks to fully kill the growth and prevent regrowth. When I remove the tarp, the magic is underneath: • The roots are still in the soil • Soil structure is intact • Microbial life is undisturbed • 0RG@N!C matter is now feeding the earth Those roots slowly decompose underground, feeding beneficial microbes. The terminated cover crop becomes a thick, natural mulch layer. Then I plant directly into it, making sure my seed or transplant gets soil contact. In the video, I’m planting potatoes straight through the dead cover crop. No flipping. No tilling. No disruption. This method: – Suppresses weeds – Retains moisture – Prevents erosion – Builds long-term soil health – Encourages microbial diversity Crops that thrive in this system: • Potatoes • Sweet potatoes • Winter & summer squash • Watermelon • Pumpkins The healthiest soil is never bare. It was so interesting to try to explain what we do to industry professionals 😝 and telling them the price of the compost always proved to almost shock them out of their seats! There was a surprising amount of interest in hearing more and it gave me hope that someday this will go big. I am really proud of these windrows you guys-microbe farm is doing its job.
