EAAs we continue celebrating the Sheroes in the fifth annual East Ramapo Regent Judith Johnson series, Jocelyne Daniel is in today’s spotlight.
Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Ms. Daniel moved to the United States as a teenager, quickly learning English and graduating from Brandeis High School in Manhattan. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with a minor in Afro-American studies from Brooklyn College, where she also studied abroad in France, and later a Master of Education in Bilingual Education from the City College of New York.
Ms. Daniel dedicated more than 40 years to teaching social studies, French and Creole, inspiring generations of bilingual Haitian Creole students in East Ramapo and beyond. She organized cultural programs, led student trips and fostered community engagement, earning recognition for her outstanding service. Even in retirement, Ms. Daniel continues mentoring youth, empowering them to embrace their heritage and reach their fullest potential.

Mary McCleod Bethune was a tireless advocate for education, women and children beginning with her founding of the Daytona Normal and Industrial Institute for Negro Girls in 1904. efforts on behalf of education and of improved racial relations brought her to national prominence, advising President Franklin D. Roosevelt on social justice issues. Her work in education spanned more than 50 years.
