When Rick Rubin and JAY-Z were working on 99 Problems, Rick Rubin has explained that the process was completely unplanned in a traditional sense. JAY-Z doesn’t write anything down in the studio, so everything comes from just listening, thinking, and building it in his head while the beat plays.
Rubin played the beat and JAY-Z immediately felt it. He told Rubin to just keep it looping. Then he sat back in the control room, not writing anything, just quietly humming along and thinking for around 15–20 minutes. No pen, no paper, nothing on the table, jut him locked in with the sound.
Then he got up and went into the booth and recorded the whole thing straight through. After finishing, he did another take where the lyrics stayed the same, but the phrasing shifted slightly. Rubin has said it was one of those moments where it felt unreal to watch, like the whole song was already finished in his head before he even stepped up to the mic.
