The Hillsborough River turned a shade of green on Saturday, what’s going on over there and should people be worried? Let’s hear from@our “experts!” A petition led by @captdustinpack and last year, @captainsforcleanwater got my attention, and when I looked into it, I had more questions than answers. 1. Their use of the terms biodegradable and absorption (should have been ADsorption) were red flags for me. 2. There were no papers cited with claims, and the papers I found were for the application of tracer dye in laboratory studies, not for the application of turning a river green. I could not find an ingredients list, and if the only ingredient was the dye then: 3. They listed nitrogen oxide as a possible product of combustion, when there is no nitrogen in the compound. I’m not sure if they were counting the atmospheric nitrogen or there are more ingredients than listed. But if nitrogen is part of this mixture, I think we, on the southwest coast of Florida might have some concerns… Just because something isn’t toxic, does not mean it’s not harmful. that being said, we’re not seeing any signs of acute harm, no fish kills, but the perception of adding chemicals to a waterway unnecessarily isn’t the best look for a coastline who is economically dependent on environmental and water quality What are your thoughts? #stpatricksday #tampa #florida #tampagirl #water #waterquality #riverogreen
