Koko had been grieving for six months following the passing of her close gorilla companion, Michael. During their time together, Williams gently interacted with her by playing, tickling, and even letting her try on his glasses.
This led to an extraordinary moment: Koko began smiling and laughing again for the first time since her loss. The staff at The Gorilla Foundation in California later shared that the effect was mutual, and that Robin, too, was visibly moved by their bond. He later reflected on the moment, saying, "We shared something extraordinary: laughter."
More than a decade later, after Robin Williams' passing in 2014, Koko was told what had happened. According to her caregiver, she became visibly emotional, her posture instantly changed, and she signed the word "cry."
