The Goo Goo Dolls didn’t just come from the 90s — they helped define it. Starting as a gritty punk band in late-80s Buffalo, they slowly transformed into one of the most successful alternative rock acts of the decade. On July 4th, 2004, they returned home for the biggest hometown show of their career. Over 60,000 fans filled Niagara Square for a free outdoor concert, turning downtown Buffalo into a massive open-air arena. The performance was filmed and later released as Live in Buffalo: July 4th, 2004 — a time capsule of a band at its peak.
Then the storm hit.
Mid-set, during “January Friend,” a torrential downpour soaked the stage, the crowd, and the band. They were briefly pulled off for safety, forced to skip several songs, then came back and finished the show anyway — guitars dripping, amps soaked, and tens of thousands of people refusing to leave.
