Al mediodía, Los Beatles dieron en la terraza de los estudios Apple Corps un recital sorpresa que sería el último. Unos meses después se separaron oficialmente. Sin embargo, no sería el último álbum. Ese año y sabiendo que se acercaba el fin, se pusieron de acuerdo para hacer el último trabajo: Abbey Road. En 1966 habían decidido no tocar en vivo, cansados de no poder sonar como querían y que los gritos de los fans sonaran más fuerte que su música. Sabían que quizás fuera la última vez. Habían estado todo el mes creando nuevos temas y grabando algo que sería un show y terminó siendo un documental que los mostraba creando. Este último recital podría haber sido en un barco, en las pirámides en Egipto o en cualquier otro lugar. Se decidió que fuera en la terraza, que ni siquiera se sabía si soportaría el peso de los equipos. Duró casi 45 minutos. John Lennon tenía los dedos congelados y usó un abrigo de Yoko Ono. Ringo Starr usó un impermeable de su esposa, George Harrison tenía un abrigo de piel y Paul McCartney sólo una camisa y un traje. Tocaron parte de los nuevos temas para lo que sería el álbum Let It Be. Es realmente bueno que todo haya quedado registrado en una película y en un documental de casi 8 horas que Peter Jackson realizó con más de 60 horas de imágenes y 150 horas de audio. Todo remasterizado. Se destacan la calidad de imagen y sonido y un punto nuevo: la cordialidad del trato entre ellos a pesar de las diferencias. Habían comenzado los primeros días de enero, entre desencuentros, separaciones, discusiones pero siempre atravesados por la creatividad, el talento de todos y ese plus de workaholic que McCartney le impulsaba a todo. Tenían ese mes para hacer un documental y un álbum. El nombre de Get Back hacía alusión al deseo de regreso a la frescura de los principios, volver a ellos. En siete años tuvieron una evolución impresionante. Desde las canciones de amor para adolescentes y los covers de bandas norteamericanas con que explotaron, hasta la última oleada de experimentación que revolucionó la cultura en apenas tres años y cinco albums, comenzando con Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band. Pasaron por tantos géneros musicales como quisieron: pop, rock, rockabilly, blues, funky, progresivo, metal y hasta clásico. Sólo en siete años. Dejaron de tocar en vivo en 1966 cansados de no ser escuchados por los gritos de las fans. Fueron los primeros en tocar en estadios. Experimentaron con loops de grabaciones y con todo tipo de instrumentos. Claro, sin un productor y amigo como George Martin, no hubiera sido lo mismo. Ese 30 de enero ni siquiera estaban seguros que la terraza aguantara el peso. No habían pedido permiso y la policía, por quejas, fue a desconectar los equipos. El frío era insoportable. John Lennon decía que tenía los dedos tan duros por el frío que no podía hacer bien los acordes. Ringo estaba resfriado. George Harrison tenía un tapado de piel y Paul estaba sólo con un traje delgado y camisa. Alguna prensa creía que estaban acabados. Sorprendieron a todos y aún lo siguen haciendo.
