I go into detail here! ✖️In general, healthy shoulders have sufficient mobility in the shoulder & thoracic spine, and strong, efficient, and controlled scapular stabilizers and rotator cuff muscles because this joint MOVES a lot (it needs to!). ⁣ ⁣ 💥One issue I see with patients from all backgrounds is this painful area down 1-3 inches below the tip of the shoulder, or a radiating ache around the front/back. ⁣ ⁣ ✖️With ruling out the neck and possible nerve referral, this pain may be tendon pain. And tendon pain manifests with an overused or inefficient muscle that isn't controlling load well and so instead of transferring energy and being the middleman, the tendon is basically getting dumped on and overloaded. If this happens TOO much/often, tendinopathies are possible. ⁣ ⁣ 🤔 Maybe you know these are all important but.. what if you could be actually hitting this area better? ⁣ ⁣ 📌 You only have TWO muscles that externally rotate the shoulder: the infraspinatus and teres minor, whereas you have FIVE that internally rotate it. So naturally, ER is harder for many people. It's also SUPER important to be strong for overhead movement/sports. These exercises focus on motor control, strength, and endurance. ⁣ ⁣ ⬇️ Try these moves to zone in on it with intention!:⁣ ⁣ 1️⃣ Floor screws⁣ - tap into the shoulder blades and ER’s 2️⃣ Banded Clocks⁣ 3️⃣ SL ER (with a towel)⁣ 4️⃣ Supine isometric ER⁣ 5️⃣ Standing ER hold⁣ 6️⃣ Prone ER superset⁣ - endurance 🌶 ⁣ 🔑 These exercises have some key components. ⁣ -Positioning: set the shoulder blade towards the spine (don't lock it DOWN/back per se)⁣ -Elbow slightly in front, not falling back⁣ -Using a towel for these concepts helps position the tip of the shoulder in the "best" angle in the socket for optimal muscle pull. ⁣ ⚠️ None if these should hurt. I can’t change it, so I’m choosing to focus on what I can control. That means focusing on Thomas, my recovery, and getting back to racing in the pool and riding in the arena again — just a little later than planned. It also gives me precious time to be the best Mum I can be, soaking up these moments that go far too quickly. And some extra space to keep focusing on my concussion rehab, which is slowly but surely heading in the right direction. We’ve got this.
