CAFor Memorial Day this year, I ran Boston’s “Run to Remember” Half Marathon to pay tribute to fallen first responders.
A day prior, I was wrapping up a 3 day training camp with some friends in Arizona, where we tested our limits physically & mentally. Our biggest day consisted of hiking to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back up, then summiting Mt Humphreys (the highest peak in AZ). When considering flying across the country and running a half marathon immediately following, I knew I wasn’t going to be fresh or recovered by any means, but it seemed quite fitting for the cause.
When first responders are called to action, it doesn’t matter when, where, or what they are asked to do. They rise to the occasion and get the job done. So, I did the same. I rallied through fatigue and sore legs, and ran my first half marathon.
My finish time was 1:55:16 (minus a port o potty pit stop). I aimed for an 8:30 - 9:00 min/mile pace, and was able to hold that with consistent mile splits. The start was tough, and my body protested. But after mile 2, I hit a stride, and by mile 6, I hardly felt anything. Endlessly impressed by what my body can do. And forever inspired by those who lay their lives down in service of our country. Today, I ran for you. 🇺🇸
