SPIn 1980, when astronomer Carl Sagan famously declared that we are “made of star stuff,” he was revealing a simple but astonishing truth the atoms in our bodies were forged in the hearts of ancient stars that lived and died billions of years before Earth existed.
That realization changes how we see ourselves.
The carbon in our cells, the oxygen we breathe, the iron in our blood all were created in violent stellar explosions called supernovae. Long before life began, the universe was already preparing the ingredients for it. In a very real sense, every human being is a rearrangement of cosmic debris, assembled by nature into something capable of thought and feeling.
And that, many scientists argue, is enough.
We do not need to be made of anything supernatural to be meaningful. The fact that matter from dead stars can organize itself into living beings beings that can love, learn, and wonder about the universe is extraordinary on its own. Meaning does not come from where we came from, but from what we do with the brief time we are given.
We are the universe, becoming aware of itself.
