CRTwo giant oarfish were spotted swimming side by side near the coast of Japan — a very rare and unusual sight. The video was captured by an Twitter user called toythefishing near Sakai City in Fukui Prefecture. In the footage, the two long, silver fish can be seen moving slowly near the surface of the water.
Oarfish usually live deep in the ocean, around 200 to 1,000 meters below the surface. Humans almost never see them. Spotting even one near the surface is rare — but seeing two together like this is almost unheard of.
Scientifically known as Regalecus glesne, the oarfish is the longest bony fish in the world. It can grow up to 30 feet (9 meters) long. With its ribbon-like silver body and smooth, serpent-like movement, it has inspired many sea serpent and sea dragon legends throughout history.
In Japan, the oarfish is called “Ryugu no tsukai,” which means “Messenger from the Sea God’s Palace.” Some old beliefs say that when oarfish appear near the shore, it could be a warning sign of natural events like earthquakes or tsunamis. This idea became popular after several oarfish were found before the 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunami.
However, scientists say there is no clear scientific proof that oarfish can predict disasters. Their appearance near the surface may be linked to changes in ocean conditions, illness, or strong currents. Still, seeing these deep-sea creatures rise from the dark depths of the ocean feels mysterious and unsettling.
The ocean is still full of secrets we don’t completely understand. So when two giant oarfish suddenly appear near the surface together, it makes people wonder…
