THLately, the market has been discussing a rather drastic concept: the SaaSpocalypse๐ง๐๐ปโฆ
Looking at the stock drops of off-the-shelf giants like Salesforce or Adobe, the superficial argument is that if AI can write code at near-zero cost, anyone can build software, and these companies will disappear.
But the reality is that the value of tech infrastructure was never in the code.
If that were the case, the Open Source ecosystem would have annihilated them 20 years ago. What truly makes an enterprise system valuable are things that code cannot replicate:
1๏ธโฃ First, boardroom trust. No C-Level executive risks their companyโs operation on an improvised system; they choose robustness.
2๏ธโฃ Second, structural workflows. When a company adopts a platform, they intertwine it with other systems and train their team. Five years later, that workflow is the companyโs DNA. You can clone the code, but you canโt clone operational adoption.
3๏ธโฃ And third, network effects, where the infrastructure sustains itself because the entire market collaborates on the same standard.
So, what will actually happen in day-to-day operations?
Any software that is merely a pretty interface for manual data entry has an expiration date. We are heading toward a scenario of hyperautomation where the traditional UI loses relevance. Software becomes pure data plumbing, while AI agents handle the technical execution.
The role of the human team will no longer be to make repetitive clicks and shuffle spreadsheets, but to act strictly as a strategic validator (human in the loop).
Ultimately, the SaaSpocalypse is not the end of software. It is the end of mechanical work, and the beginning of an era of professionals capable of deeply understanding complex problems to build simple systems.
