“This is an opportunity to come together as province, as a country, under the leadership of the Indigenous communities in a good way, that respects the land and waters of the Seal River region.” - Wab Kinew @wabber Efforts to protect the Seal River Watershed are still underway — and today we’re reflecting back on a milestone that helped set it in motion! Guided by a vision held by the four First Nations of the @seal.riverwatershedinitiative, a collaborative process is underway to ensure this vast northern landscape remains healthy, vibrant, and accessible for all Canadians. A protected watershed means clean water, thriving wildlife, and a place that continues to support communities, cultures, and visitors alike. It’s a vision rooted in care for the land — and in the belief that protecting this irreplaceable landscape benefits everyone. #indigenousconservation #sealriver #sealriverwatershed #srwa

Dustin Evon is the Tribal Resilience Coordinator for Kwigillingok in Alaska. His village had to evacuate when the remnants of #Halong hit. Extreme weather is just one element of Alaska’s Climate Crisis. Tribal communities like Kwig need to migrate to survive- but the funding isn’t there. 🚨 OUR PUBLIC OLD GROWTH FORESTS ARE IN DANGER - Senate Bill 2554 (HR.41), would upend decades of settled law by creating land claims for five new corporations under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA). Passed in 1971, ANCSA was billed as a settlement of Indigenous land claims in Alaska. But rather than return land to tribal governments, it established for-profit corporations led by a small cadre of highly compensated executives, whose mandate has been the extraction and liquidation of natural resources. Wanda Culp, a Tlingit elder and outspoken advocate for the Tongass, has called ANCSA “an industrial-rooted tool of Congress, created to exterminate Indigenous land use and streamline the liquidation of ‘natural resources’ in our ancient ancestral homelands.” 📣TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION: Please contact your senators and representative TODAY to oppose this bill and urge them to protect our public lands instead of handing them over for private exploitation! Call the congressional switchboard at 202-224-3121, then ask for your senator or representative. Water is life In Southeast Alaska, it sustains our cultures, our salmon, and our communities. This World Water Day, we honor the leadership of Tribes working to protect and steward the cold, clean waters that have sustained us since time immemorial. When we care for water, we care for everything connected to it. We are grateful for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Geological Survey, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs for supporting our work to leverage our Transboundary Watersheds Program to Advance Shared Knowledge Sources and Multinational Coordination.

As the landless bill gains traction, we want to recognize that our landless communities are asking for a small amount of land compared to what would remain in federal ownership. If this legislation passes, one half of one percent of federal Southeast Alaska land would be transferred to Native ownership, with about 190 times more left in federal control. This change, returning land to its rightful owners, would ensure continued protection of public access for recreational activities and subsistence lifestyles such as fishing and hunting. To stay updated on the bill’s progress in Congress, you can follow our socials on Facebook and Instagram.

The U.S. government’s approval of a lithium mine at Thacker Pass, Nevada, highlights a dark side of "green energy": the desecration of land sacred to the Paiute and Shoshone people. This site is a hallowed 1865 massacre ground, yet it's being cleared for EV batteries under a process fast-tracked while tribes were unable to protest. For Indigenous communities, destroying sacred sites for electric cars isn't progress—it’s colonization with a new excuse, proving that Native land is still being sacrificed for corporate profit. ⚡🏜️✊ #ThackerPass #IndigenousRights #GreenEnergy #ProtectSacredLand #ClimateJustice #NativeAmericanHistory

Court challenge seeks delay of major Arctic Alaska oil lease sale A major oil lease sale planned for Arctic Alaska is facing last-minute legal challenges. Environmental groups and Alaska Native advocates asked a federal judge in Anchorage this week to delay a March 18 lease sale in the National Petroleum Reserve–Alaska. The auction would offer about 5.5 million acres of federal land on the western North Slope for oil and gas development, one of the largest sales in the reserve since leasing began there in 1999. One lawsuit filed by the Native group Grandmothers Growing Goodness and The Wilderness Society seeks to block the sale entirely. The groups argue a new federal management plan improperly opened about 82 percent of the reserve to development, including areas around Teshekpuk Lake, an important habitat for caribou, migratory birds, and other Arctic wildlife. A second lawsuit from residents of the Inupiat village of Nuiqsut focuses on a smaller area near the lake that had been protected under a 2024 agreement with the federal government. Federal attorneys argue Congress has already directed the government to hold multiple lease sales in the reserve under the sweeping budget and tax law passed last year. At the same time, lawmakers in Washington have been debating broader permitting reforms that would shorten environmental reviews and limit some legal challenges to energy projects. U.S. District Judge Sharon Gleason said she expects to rule before bids are opened on Wednesday. The outcome could determine whether the sale moves forward or becomes the latest chapter in the long legal battles over Arctic oil development. Seward Public Radio | Juneau | Dorene Lorenz
