I think an “Only THIS works” approach to programming for SOF is propaganda pushed by ignorant ~military bros who don’t know any better and mask their ignorance about improving fitness by cramming “hard stuff” into programs because ‘selection is hard.’ 🤦 Things like: “You HAVE to do barbell compounds to get stronger” “You HAVE to do workouts that leave you smoked” “You won’t have optimal conditions at SFAS so you should train in sub-optimal conditions like less food and less sleep.” This is just the tip of the ice berg for stupid sh** I see in SOF Prep Programs across the internet. Why it’s all wrong: -Hybrid programming is a game of trade offs. Not every exercise is worth the residual fatigue, not every set & rep scheme is worth the central nervous system burden. You MUST USE the minimum amount of work to accomplish the ends, not the maximum amount of work. Few understand this, fewer understand how to program for it. -Different trainees have different capacities. What works for one person may not work for another. This is DOUBLY TRUE when you consider training age. Half the guys I work with or consult with who are training for selection do not have the requisite years of lifting barbells to include deadlifting or back squatting into their hybrid program. (SFAS prep is not the time to learn) -SFAS Prep is not about doing hard things, not until the very end, in the final 8-12 weeks. It is simply about improving the weak aspects of your fitness and performance. Doing generally “hard stuff” is not the fastest path to improving specific performance metrics. -Arbitrary programming increases individual risk of injury. Periodt. Tailored programming greatly reduces risk. I suggest using a 1 on 1 coach to program for you, or consider consulting with one to get specific about what YOUR prep needs. Doing a sof prep program just because it’s called “sof prep” = not trying hard enough. #specialforces #sfas #army #military #running #deadlift

I’ve always heard backlash when I claim land nav is super simple, and if you do the necessary prep, it’s easy. Compared to most things in life, sure, it’s not easy. It’s even harder when you’re wearing a ruck. And smoked from the days leading in. And under slept and under fed. And stressed to the gills about your selection fate, as it’s heavily influenced by your land nav success. But the actual Xs and Os of using a map and compass to find your way isn’t hard. It’s the same exact thing as having a GPS, and if you’re skilled with it, it’s even MORE reliable than a GPS, especially out in the woods with spotty connection. From there, it just comes down to physical fitness, which is also simple to tackle thru preparation. But still, it remains the #1 reason for failures at SFAS. The 2 main reasons guys fail land nav are: 1. Lack of confidence, which is a direct result of lack of competence, which is a direct result of lack of preparation, which is a direct result of lack of give a f*ck AND/OR lack of humility to admit they need reps. 2. Excess junk between the ears, which clouds judgement and limits focus on the task at hand—which is getting to your next check point, which is (should be, at least) at MOST, 1K away. It’s that simple. But the best part? You can make it easy on yourself, too. Because preparation can tackle BOTH issues. The more reps you do, the better you’ll get. The better you get, the more confidence you’ll cultivate. Also, the better you get, the more accustomed to focusing on the signal (next check point) and blocking out the noise (fatigue, soreness, pain, hunger, roads, spiders, snakes, rain, cold, snow, heat, azimuths, bowling alleys, how your battles are fairing, etc,) TL;DR - want to greatly increase your chances? Competed in the CrossFit games? Put your ruck on. Saved a baby from a burning car? You’re a good samaritan👏. Negotiate the obstacle. Won the Heisman trophy? Outstanding, your stiff arm won’t help you bust draws. Got your PHD? Cool story. You must know things. Go find your points. 10 sniper kills? Your rubber ducky doesn’t fire. You were a LEO? No bad boys out here. Continue training. Ranger tab? Next soldiah. Ranger School Honor Grad, though? Amazing! The apparatus won’t carry itself. I think you get the picture. What you did prior to day 1 at SFAS is irrelevant. Can certain past experiences make specific phases of the Q course easier for you to grasp? Without question. But it doesn’t matter at selection. The only thing that matters is what you do from day 1 to 21. The ONLY thing you need to do is perform.
