FIBack in October, our members were given the chance to learn about voice therapy and assessment from the lead of “The Voice Rehab”, Melissa Grassia-Chisholm, MS, CCC-SLP. It was an incredible opportunity for FIU NSSLHA students to see a live videostroboscopy and see how one of our member’s vocal cords worked with different vocal exercises.

BLSpeech-language pathologists and SLP students—can we chat for a second?
I’ve been out of grad school for over 15 years now, and I’m curious: What are you learning these days about supporting autistic children in speech therapy?
Back when I was in school, we didn’t talk about autism much. I had one autistic child during my clinicals, and he loved books—so we read and worked on syntax. But that was it. There was no training on how to truly support autistic kids in a meaningful, respectful way.
So here’s my question:
Are you learning anything about neurodiversity-affirming therapy?
Are professors talking about Gestalt language processors or echolalia?
Is there any focus on sensory integration, sensory-motor play, or play-based therapy?
I know the field is shifting (thank goodness!), and I’d love to hear what your graduate programs are teaching. Are you getting more hands-on experience with autistic children? Are you learning how to support regulation, connection, and spontaneous communication—not just compliance or language drills?
