Okay this is wild 😳 Some sea slugs can deliberately detach their heads from their bodies, before then growing entirely new bodies… 😶 That means these guys can fully separate their heads from their hearts, and just function without a heart until they regenerate a new one a week later. According to researchers at Nara Women’s University in Japan, the headless bodies continued to move and react to touch for several days (or even months) - but didn’t regrow new heads. Apparently this phenomenon is just for young slugs though, as older ones that tried this in the study didn’t manage to feed enough to regenerate their bodies. #slug #slugandlettuce #slugsofinstagram #slugs #seaslug #seaslugs #amazingscience #sciencefacts #euronewsgreen #euronewsliving _______________ Follow @euronewsliving _______________

A Flabellina Nudibranch moves across the sea floor in the Salish Sea. These vibrant sea slugs have long, delicate structures called cerata on their backs. The cerata help them breathe and can also store stinging cells from their food, giving them a unique way to protect themselves from predators. We found this one at 24m (80ft) on a sandy sea floor, surrounded by hundreds of other Flabellinas and their spiral-shaped egg ribbons. This is a sea angel, a type of #slug whose inner beauty is as great as its outer because... it's #translucent. Yep, those brilliant colors are its internal organs (its heart is red, gonads red-orange, and other internal structures are yellow). Because they're so #colorful they will either wait in place for food to pass while others are power-swimmers (as far as slugs go), rowing their wings back and forth to reach a top speed of 354 meters per hour ~0.22mph, which is pretty speedy for a slug and about twice the speed of sea butterflies, their main source of #prey. 🎥: @aquatilis_expedition . . . #ocean #sea #beautiful #underwater #underwatervideo #seacreatures #cool #todayilearned #marine #explore #adventure #seaangel

The Chromeleon Slug is a master of disguise, disappearing seamlessly into the texture of tree bark—until something disturbs it. With the slightest touch, it triggers a dramatic “color alarm.” Tiny pigment cells in its skin expand instantly, transforming its body into a vivid mosaic of bright, warning spots. The sudden flash of color shocks birds and predatory insects, while also advertising its foul, inedible slime. Moments later, the slug makes its escape—gliding toward a shadowed patch, its colors slowly dimming as it melts back into perfect camouflage. #slug #chameleon #forest #nature #wildlife

° ° ° #explore #explorepage #staycurious #sciences #bhfyp #plants #slug #venusflytrap #dionaea

Slugs have more teeth than sharks…up to 27,000!! Their teeth aren’t like the ones we have in our mouths. Rather they have an array of tooth-like protrusions called denticles, which can measure up to half a millimetre in length. I’m sorry to anyone who has molluscophobia… #slug #animals #biology #scicomm #teeth

This fascinating marine creature doesn’t just snack on algae; it steals its chloroplasts and incorporates them into its own skin to blend in perfectly with seaweed. This adaptation, known as kleptoplasty, helps it avoid predators by making it nearly invisible in its environment. Would you want a power like this? It’s a slug’s life… If the conditions aren’t right, slug eggs can lay dormant for months, or even years. Here, in this dank cranny, the damp soil keeps them moist and protected. And it’s time for these ones to hatch. Seep into the slimy, shimmery world of this sea slug.  Found across the world’s oceans, nudibranchs are relatively small, but their vibrantly colored shell-less bodices of varying shapes more than make up for their size. Most wear their horn and feather-like gills on their backs, earning them the name ‘naked gills’ in the scientific community. There are over 2,000 known and identified species of nudibranchs, with new ones being discovered regularly.
Their bright coloring, which helps them camouflage and scare away predators, is derived from the food they eat. Nudibranchs are carnivorous bottom-dwellers, scouring sea floors for algae, corals, anemones, sponges, and sometimes even other nudibranchs. They also carry both female and male organs, giving them the ability to reproduce with any other member of the species.  Shown above is a Flabellina iodinea in Los Angeles, California.  Video by @waterbod Source: National Geographic

This snotty looking blob is a Sea Hare. At low tide a couple had washed up on the local dog beach. The first one I returned to the water started to look healthy again after about 10 minutes. The second may have been too dried up to survive but I took it out to deeper water in the hope it might come good. . . #seahare #seaslug #low tide #slug
