Feet on a stool might look like a small adjustment — but neurologically and biomechanically, it’s a big deal. The body develops and stabilizes from the ground up. When a child’s feet are supported, the nervous system senses stability through proprioceptive input at the feet and ankles. That input helps activate postural muscles, organize the core, and create a stable base for fine motor control. And the tongue? It’s fine motor. When feet are dangling, we often see: • Core disengagement • Increased fidgeting or body shifting • Jaw instability • Tongue pushing for stability • Reduced breath support • Decreased endurance In oral myofunctional therapy, feeding therapy, and articulation therapy, we’re asking for precision — accurate tongue placement, coordinated chewing, controlled airflow, efficient swallowing. Precision requires proximal stability. Grounded feet → stable pelvis → supported trunk → organized jaw → more efficient tongue function. If a child’s feet don’t reach the floor, add a stool, box, or firm surface under them. The difference in body organization (and sound clarity, chewing coordination, or tongue control) can be immediate. We don’t just treat the mouth. We support the whole system. #oralmyofunctionaltherapy #feedingtherapy #speechtherapy #pediatrictherapy #myofunctionaltherapy

Here’s how it helps: 1. Foot Muscle Activation Standing on a sensory pad challenges the small intrinsic foot muscles that support the arch. Kids with pronation often have underactive foot stabilizers—this game helps wake them up! 2. Proprioceptive Training The unstable surface improves the brain’s awareness of foot position and encourages the body to adjust alignment in real time—helping correct that inward roll. 3. Ankle & Core Engagement Balancing naturally recruits ankle stabilizers and core muscles. This creates a stronger foot-to-core connection, which is essential for correcting pronation patterns. Bonus Tip: Encourage your child to gently press down through the base of the big toe while balancing—this helps lift the arch and build alignment awareness over time.

If you’re looking at your 18-month or 2-year-old’s flat feet and wondering, “Is this normal?” “Should I be worried?” “Am I missing something?” Pause right here. Take a breath. 💛 ✨ Flat feet in babies and toddlers are NORMAL. Most arches don’t even begin to form until around age 4. So if your child isn’t standing yet, has soft flat feet, or looks a little wobbly — that alone is not a problem. But here’s what most parents are never told 👇 🧠 Even when arches appear later, foot and posture issues can still develop if the body doesn’t learn how to use those feet well. And that’s where timing and habits matter. 🦶 Why do problems show up later? It’s rarely “bad genetics.” It’s usually a mix of: • long sitting phases with little varied movement • early walking habits and posture patterns • shoes that don’t match the child’s feet or needs • strength and coordination developing unevenly So if you’re noticing: • flat feet that don’t improve • in-toeing or feet turning out • collapsing ankles • awkward standing or walking patterns 👉 there is SO much you can do, especially early.

Is your child walking on their toes? 👣 Occasional toe walking can be normal in toddlers, but persistent toe walking may signal something that needs attention. Early therapy can make a big difference! Reasons a therapist may recommend treatment: 🦶 Tight muscles or tendons Constant toe walking can shorten the calf muscles and Achilles tendon, making it harder for a child to walk flat-footed over time. 🧠 Sensory processing differences Some children toe walk because they are seeking or avoiding certain sensory input from the ground. Therapy can help regulate those sensory responses. ⚖️ Balance and coordination challenges Walking on toes shifts the body’s center of gravity and may impact balance, stability, and overall movement skills. 🏃 Delayed motor development Toe walking can affect running, jumping, and other age-appropriate motor milestones. 🦵 Posture and alignment concerns Long-term toe walking may lead to changes in posture, foot structure, and walking patterns. ✨ The good news? Early therapy can help retrain walking patterns, improve flexibility, and support healthy development. If you notice consistent toe walking after age 2–3, it may be time for an evaluation. Barefoot moments matter. 👣 You’ll often see us working without shoes in therapy — walking the balance beam, standing on different surfaces, or gently waking up the feet with touch. Why? The feet contain over 7,000 nerve endings that send important information to the brain about balance, body position, and movement. When the feet receive input, it helps organize the whole body — supporting: • balance and posture • coordination • body awareness • regulation Through the body’s fascial connections, stability from the feet can even support head, neck, and oral-motor function. So yes… you’ll often find therapists touching little feet. Because development often starts from the ground up. 👣 #pediatrictherapy #occupationaltherapy #pediatricpt #sensoryintegration #barefoottherapy #childdevelopment #toptherapyict

If you’ve ever looked at your little one’s feet and worried about not seeing an arch, you are not alone… flat feet is one of the things we’re asked about most often. But rest assured, in the early years, it’s completely normal for children to appear flat-footed. Toddlers still have soft fat pads under the arch area, and the muscles and ligaments that support the arches are still developing. What might look like a flat foot is simply a foot that’s still growing. Arches aren’t something we need to create or correct in young children. They develop gradually over time, as bones form, muscles strengthen and movement becomes more confident. What’s most helpful to understand is what will support healthy, natural development, which generally means: – Encouraging plenty of movement, including time spent barefoot – Choosing shoes that allow the foot to flex and bend – Avoiding unnecessary stiffness or restriction This is the third reel in a series about how children’s feet develop in the early years 👣 Next, I’ll share some fascinating facts about how your child’s feet help their brain develop. As a pediatric PT, I don’t jump to bracing unless it’s truly indicated. Toe walking alone does NOT automatically mean a child needs orthotics. I look at: ✔️ Range of motion ✔️ Strength ✔️ Motor control ✔️ Functional impact ✔️ Underlying diagnosis If those things are appropriate, we start with movement strategies first. Bracing has a place. Every child is different. This is not medical advice. If you’re concerned, talk to your own provider 🤍 Follow for evidence-based pediatric PT content. #toewalking #childdevelopment #pediatricpt #babymilestones #pediatricphysicaltherapy

Toe walking is something I see a LOT in the clinic 👇 Sometimes it’s just a phase… but often it’s a child’s way of seeking sensory input, stability, or avoiding ankle movement they don’t yet feel comfortable with. These activities help strengthen the muscles and movement patterns kids need for a more grounded, heel-to-toe walking pattern. In this video, we’re working on: 1. Balance + body awareness (kicking cones on a wobble cushion) 2. Intrinsic foot strength (picking up and releasing bean bags with the toes) 3. Motor control + precision (kicking a bean bag without knocking the cone) 4. Deep squatting to stretch the calves and activate glutes 5. Heavy work through the legs (backwards scooter board pushing) Why this matters 👇 Kids who toe walk often benefit from activities that build: — ankle mobility — calf flexibility — foot strength — balance and proprioception When the body feels more stable and organized, heel contact becomes easier and more natural during walking. ❗️Save this for later if you have a toe walker at home. And remember: persistent toe walking can have multiple causes, so if you’re noticing it often, an OT or PT evaluation can help determine the “why.” DM me today to come tour the clinic! #lifetouchtherapypllc #concordnc #pediatricot #themagicalot #occupationaltherapy

👉Sooner or later, parents of children with flat feet, valgus or knock-knees begin to realize that waiting for feet to "fix themselves" and hoping for a miracle simply doesn't work. And those who bought insoles for their child start noticing that something isn't quite right - more precisely, that insoles don't solve the problem in the long term. With insoles, feet may look somewhat better, but without them you still don't see strong legs or a properly developed arch. That's when the search for specialists who focus on exercising begins. And finding a truly good one can feel like looking for a needle in a haystack. Let's be honest - almost anyone can speak well, but what actually happens in practice is a completely different story. Let me tell you about the 3-step foot training system that works reliably in my practice: 1️⃣SELF-MASSSGE OF THE FEET We always start with self-massage to stimulate sensory receptors. Proper foot positioning is crucial - the arch must be lifted! I often help children manually form the correct arch at the begining. 2️⃣ANKLE JOINT MOBILIZATION Next, we move on to stretching the calves, hamstrings, and mobilizing the ankle joints. I pay attention to the whole body: glutes should be engaged, the crown of the head teaching forward, pelvis in a neutral position. 3️⃣ACTIVATION & STRENGTHENING This stage combines two key elements: Toe work (which also stimulates brain development!) Strengthening exercises with the toes spread wide (building arch stability). ❗The most common mistake is: ignoring the feet collapsing inward during exercises. 💬Comment 'COURSE' and I'll send you the first part of my 6-month Foot Improvement Program.

Toe walking? We don’t just stretch calves — we retrain the whole system. 👣 With our TumblTrak Sliders, kids have to shift their center of mass back over their heels to glide. That simple movement turns on: 🔥 Quads 🔥 Glutes 🔥 Deep abs 🔥 Postural & stability muscles Suddenly we’re getting true heel loading, balance, proprioception, vestibular input, and motor planning — all through play. This is neuromuscular re-education disguised as fun. And that’s where real change happens. 💙
