Our brand new AC unit in the attic decided to go rogue and leak all the way down to the second floor hallway and bedroom. Oh—and did I mention this happened during our very first guest stay? The wildest part? Our guests work for ServePro and were in town helping with flood recovery efforts in Kentucky. The irony is not lost on me. I cried. I panicked. I tried to laugh through the tears. This was supposed to be our big “we made it” moment, not a waterlogged nightmare. But here’s the thing—if they hadn’t been there, the whole house could have flooded. And for that, I am so grateful. Short-term rentals are beautiful, exciting, creative—and sometimes, completely overwhelming. This is what it looks like behind the scenes. We show up, figure it out, and keep going. We finally decided it was time to stop wasting potential. For years, the garage at our lake house Airbnb was nothing more than a catch-all for the boat, the fishing gear, and stacks of firewood. It was run down, underused, and definitely not adding any value to the guest experience—or our bottom line. So we contemplated tearing it down… but instead, after discussing the plan with our contractors, we are now rebuilding it with intention. Thankful and grateful for our contractors and their hard work - it is already underway. What used to be dead space will now be a fully finished, four-season game room with heat, AC, and year-round comfort. This instantly will elevate the property, create another true gathering space for guests, and give families and groups something to enjoy no matter the weather. And I’m not stopping there—I’m adding a huge new deck off the back with a full tiki bar to make the summer months even more fun and memorable. I can’t wait until this project is completed. It will be hard not to book it for myself and my family next summer… 😉 Upgrades like this directly impact revenue. When guests get a unique experience, they’re willing to pay more. When they have more to enjoy on-site, they stay longer. And when you give them something worth talking about, the five-star reviews follow. All of that drives higher occupancy, stronger demand, and significantly better cash flow.
