WOThe Jar Test (Soil Texture)
Knowing your ratio of sand, silt, and clay helps you manage water and nutrients.
Fill a clear glass jar about 1/3 full with dry soil (remove rocks and sticks).
Fill the rest with water, leaving a little air at the top.
Add a drop of liquid dish soap (this helps the particles separate).
Shake the jar vigorously for a minute, then set it on a flat surface.
Observe the layers:
Sand will settle at the bottom within 1 minute.
Silt will settle in a lighter layer on top of the sand after about 2 hours.
Clay will take 24–48 hours to settle, leaving the water clear.

We had wet years. Saturated soils. Water that didn’t move down.
Now we’re in a dry cycle—and salts are moving up.

Field 4 was drilled the same day and with the same variety (Karat) as Field 3, but this one had 20 t/ha of sewage sludge applied; take a look at the difference.
Here’s what went into Field 4 👇
🗓️Ditch the date: drilled when soil moisture + conditions were right
✅Chase perfection: good seedbed, Horsch Cruiser, variety Karat
➡️Keep your distance: 1‑in‑7 rotation
🍀Create companions: Berseem clover
🚜Stir up after harvest: soil movement to disrupt CSFB
The result?
A noticeably taller, thicker, more advanced crop, around 6–8 inches taller than the non‑sludge field next door.

TADid you know! That you should plant your shaded food plots early before the leaves start to grow and the canopy becomes too thick? It just gives that seed a chance to germinate sooner and grow a root structure that will sustain it with less sun light!
You should also choose seeds that grow well in more shaded areas. In this food plot I’m seeding a mix of:
