WIYour voice is needed this week for California’s mountain lions.
On Wednesday–Thursday (Feb 11–12), the California Fish and Game Commission will decide whether Central Coast and Southern California mountain lions receive protections under the California Endangered Species Act.
The science is clear: The California Department of Fish and Wildlife has concluded these populations warrant protection due to habitat loss, fragmentation, vehicle strikes, and toxic rodenticides. These cats are increasingly isolated, and without action, their long-term survival is at risk.
Mountain lions aren’t just iconic. They are a keystone species and apex carnviores, essential for healthy ecosystems. Protecting them also means protecting the wildlife corridors and connected habitats that so many species depend on.
This moment has been years in the making. The petition to protect these lions was filed in 2019, and now the decision is finally here.
California residents: your voice matters right now. Urge the Commission to approve protections and follow the best available science.
