CHHow Chill Pepper toys are ‘born’: From sketch to reality! All of our designs start with bunch of simple sketches to get a general idea of proportions and the ‘feel’. Once a general shape is chosen I make more detailed drawings like you see here. Most important in our designs is minimalism without loosing recognition. After many iterations the final sketch forms the base of our 3D designs. It’s great that modern technology and old school drawing go hand in hand these days. All is done on my iPad and usually on the couch with a TV series or music on. So much more comfortable than sitting behind a desk all day. And when a 3D design is made I print the first prototypes and fit our wheels and hardware to get a sense of scale. Does it look and feel right? Is it fun to play with? Does it have presence? What colors would fit on this model? Can it actually be made in wood? And many more questions like that. When the answers are all yet we ask our incredible Germany partner to make wooden prototypes. And after some tweaks we place an order for manufacturing. The family owned company we work with has decades and decades of experience in shaping the most beautiful sustainable wood into long lasting toys; and that shows. We receive all wooden parts, our high speed skate bearings and stainless steel hardware in our small workshop here in The Netherlands where everything is checked, hand finished, hand assembled and packed to ship to happy kids (and parents) around the world. It never fails to amaze me that a simple drawing like this eventually turns into a favorite toy that’s taken everywhere. So now you know: How Chunkies are ‘born’.
