Healing piercings aren’t meant to look “perfect” right away! and that includes the presence of crust, what many people label as “unclean” is actually a normal and necessary part of the healing process. That light buildup you see is lymph fluid, a natural substance your body produces to protect and repair the wound. As it dries, it forms what we call “crusties” and its presence is a clear sign that your body is actively doing its job. These crusties also serve a purpose beyond just indicating healing, they help stabilize the jewelry and create a protective barrier during the most delicate stages. When this crust is constantly removed prematurely, whether by over cleaning or picking, it disrupts that process. This can lead to irritation, prolonged healing, and in some cases even migration or complications that could have been avoided with a more hands off approach. Clean does not mean sterile 24/7, and healing does not mean spotless. There is a difference between neglect and allowing your body to function as intended! Proper aftercare supports this process, it doesn’t fight against it. So if you’re seeing crust in the early stages, understand that it’s not a flaw or a failure in hygiene it’s a sign that your body is responding exactly as it should! The absolute best and safest way for crust to be removed is to stay hands off and allow plain water or sterile saline to gently flush the area until it softens and rinses away on its own, then pat dry. There should be no twisting, moving, or picking at the jewelry this is where most people begin to interfere with their healing without realizing it! Let’s talk crusties! The “crust” that forms around a healing piercing is usually made up of a mix of normal healing fluids 🪡 It’s commonly called “piercing crusties.” 💖 What it’s made of… 1. Lymph fluid, a clear or slightly yellowish fluid your body releases during healing. It helps carry immune cells to the area 👂🏼 2. Dead skin cells shed from the skin as the piercing heals 🥳 3. Small amounts of blood plasma, sometimes mixed with a tiny bit of dried blood, especially in the first week or so 👍🏼 4. Serous fluid which is part of the normal wound healing process that dries and forms the crust 💕 When this fluid dries in the air, it hardens and forms the crust you see around the jewellery, this can happen at the front or back of the jewellery 😁 Is it normal? Yes it absolutely is, this is not dirty or from lack of cleaning, it’s what I love to see as it means fantastic aftercare was followed ✨✨ It usually appears whitish, pale yellow, or light tan and forms in small flaky or crunchy bits like you can see in the reel 💛 Had a piercing in the last few months? Healing takes patience, perseverance and persistence. Some people heal quickly, easily and with very little trouble. Some have a few bumps along the way. Others can have ongoing issues even when they are doing everything right. Just because one piercing healed perfectly on your body does not mean the next one will do the same. Even if it is the same placement. Even if it is the same jewellery. Even if your aftercare is exactly the same. Your body is a chemical playing field. Stress, hormones, illness, sleep, swelling, pressure, movement, irritation and jewellery quality can all affect how a piercing settles. Healing is not always linear. A piercing can seem fine one week and irritated the next. That does not always mean something has gone wrong, but it does mean healing needs time, consistency and the right support. Be patient with your body. Stay consistent. And do not compare one piercing to another, even your own. #piercingeducation #piercingaftercare #newpiercing #bodypiercing #bodypiercer
