This chemical reaction can damage important structural parts.
Mercury is also very hard to clean. When spilled, it breaks into tiny droplets. These can roll under seats and inside panels.
Over time, mercury releases toxic vapor. In a closed cabin, this becomes dangerous for passengers and crew.
Cleanup often requires grounding the aircraft for long periods.
Because of these risks, airlines and safety agencies restrict mercury transport.
This rule protects both people and aircraft.
