More Wobbegong Sharks in action! These ambush predators usually stay put hiding beneath corals and waiting for passing prey, so it’s always exciting to spot them swimming over the reef. I like to challenge myself to capture unique angles of marine life in action, and getting beneath a carpet shark has been one of my goals. While filming one shark, I looked up just in time to see a second Wobbegong swimming directly towards me and I managed to drop to the sand just in time to capture the last shot, with it swimming just a couple feet above me! Follow🎖️From one single cell to standing upright and thinking. This is not motivation — this is evolution. 🧬 Life began as unicellular organisms (~3.5 billion years ago) 🌍 Oxygen changed the planet (Great Oxygenation ~2.4 billion years ago) 🦠 Complexity emerged → multicellular life 🦍 Primates evolved 🧍‍♂️ Homo erectus learned to walk upright, use tools, control fire 🧠 And here we are — questioning our own origin All of this… in one minute. Waxwings! I was so fascinated by these tiny red tips when I had the opportunity to work on this bird recently that it took me down a total rabbit hole. Why did they feel so waxy - like the seal on a letter - and was there a sassy flashy function? There are so many things I can talk about with these birds, but our attention span probably wouldn’t make way for it. Please note that these are just little titbits; there is so much more to learn so if I’ve left anything off, I’m totally aware that one could write a book on just one bird and all of its functionality and physiology! Hope you enjoy learning about this. 📚 - N.B. This is not true for all waxwings/all adults or juveniles. There is variation and can be dependant on sex, age or genus. Please forgive the spelling errors on the captions: they’re auto generated so sometimes misquote the speech. This is a process of death (yeah there are a few different types of death) called Apoptosis. Its the best way to go for your cells. After being damaged so much, they decide to pack up all the resources they have left into nice orderly bubbles (vesicles) and simply ceases existing. In medicine, I study what are the processes that can avoid this. In genetics, I studied which genes control this whole ensemble. What's facsinating, every cell in your body at any given moment is on the verge of death. But they are reminded by the cells around them, not to die. Ever wondered what that arrow Professor Lewin is holding actually represents? In physics, it’s all about Vectors! Unlike a Scalar (which is just a number, like your age or the temperature), a Vector is a quantity that needs TWO things to be complete: 1️⃣ Magnitude: How much? (Represented by the length of the arrow). 2️⃣ Direction: Which way? (Represented by where the arrowhead points). Think of it this way: Speed is a scalar (60 mph), but Velocity is a vector (60 mph North). 🧭 As Professor Lewin famously demonstrates, you can't describe the motion of the universe without knowing exactly which way things are headed! 🌌 #Physics #ScienceCommunication #WalterLewin #STEM #Vector ClassicalMechanics Education LearnPhysics MIT

GMO is an acronym for genetically modified organisms. In agriculture, it describes modern day hybrids that are created using genetic engineering techniques. But technically, EVERYTHING you eat is a GMO. You wouldn’t have corn, strawberries, bananas, broccoli, if it weren’t for humans interfering and messing with the genetics of plants. Today, we use more precise techniques than randomly breeding or mutating seeds and hoping something good happens. In the US, there are ONLY 14 FDA-approved GM food products. (None of them are wheat, by the way. Not sure why people keep spreading easily fact-checkable lies). GM crops exist because they confer a benefit: to the crop, the planet, the farmers, or the consumers. For example, papaya was nearly eliminated because of the papaya ringspot virus. 90% of papayas today are GM: they can resist the virus that decimated their species. GM technology is WILDLY misunderstood, & that is used to spread fear about science & technologies that can improve our lives & our planet.
