DNA replication is a very complex operation performed by cells, which involves thousands of compounds, structures proteins and mechanisms. Due to it's complexcity, we still have not fully figured out how the entire process occurs, but we know the general high level processes and flow of DNA replication. I'm not going to go into all of it, but heres the basic flow. DNA is stored in tightly wound and packed structures in the neucleus. When replication occurs, this structure is unpacked and the DNA strands are opened up. Once this occurs, the helical strands of DNA are unzipped at a point by an enzyme called helicase. The point of unzipping is known as a 'replication fork'. The replication fork moves along the DNA strand as it is being copied. Another enzyme called DNA polymerase then starts copying one half of the unzipped double helix DNA strand. The two half strands have a property 'antiparallel-ness', where they run in opposite directions. If we think of this as them having a start and an end, one half strand has its start on the left and end on the right, and the other has its start on the right and it's end on the left. The enzyme DNA polymerase however, can only run in one direction, say start to end, and add onto the end of an existing strand that it is copying to. Due to this, when the double helix is being copied, one DNA polymerase runs in one direction along its strand copying the DNA, while another DNA polymerase runs in the opposite direction copying the other half of the DNA double helix. The copied half attaches to the original, which ends up making two copies of the same DNA double helix, with each copy having a half of the old strand and the other half being newly copied. This process occurs at several points along a given DNA strand. When two forks run into eachother along the DNA strand, the DNA copying systems of both forks dissasemble, as they have done their part in copying the DNA strand. Natural selection is a concept in evolution that says that randomly mutated traits that are benificial to the survival of an organism will be naturally selected to be passed on to future generations while randomly mutated non benificial traits that appear will die with the individual with those mutated traits. If individuals that are not aclimated to a foreign environment are dropped into that environment, this concept will lead to the rapid development of specialized features to survive in that unfamiliar environment. Charles Darwin discovered many examples of this on the Galápagos Islands. The most famous examples being the giant turtles and finches of the islands. The turtles displayed gigantism, which was viable due to the lack of predetors. It allowed them to reach more food, be more energy efficient, store water better, etc.. As for the finches, the Galápagos Islands had various different biomes spread across the 19 island archipelago. In each of these, the finches had developed benificial characteristics that helped them get food, build shelters and survive in general. The video in the meme shows this by the fact that becoming rock colored offers an evolutionary advantage. Therefore, as the colored rock creatures randomly mutate, the creatures that are closer to rock colored are more likely to survive, leading to more creatures that are rock colored. The final result is a population of creatures that are all rock colored and perfectly camouflaged from the birds trying to eat them. In this case, the birds will also likely undergo natural selection, with traits like better eyesight or sense of smell being favoured. The second panel is an obvious and not too light humored joke about the dictator of ww2. He wanted a pure race of people, which is artificial selection. When lactose is absent, this repressor binds tightly to the operator. It acts as a physical roadblock, stopping RNA polymerase in its tracks. ​The Glucose Factor: The system also stays "OFF" (or at a very low idle) when glucose levels are high. Glucose is the cell’s favorite fuel. When it’s abundant, the cell lacks a signaling molecule called cAMP. Without cAMP, the "accelerator" protein (CAP) cannot bind to the DNA to jumpstart transcription. ​The Result: Between the repressor roadblock and the lack of a glucose-related "boost," the structural genes (lacZ, lacY, lacA) are not expressed. ​🌕 THE SWITCH ON (Lactose is Present & Glucose is Low) ​The system only fully revs up when the cell is hungry for an alternative fuel. ​The Inducer: When lactose enters the cell, it is converted into allolactose. This molecule binds to the repressor and changes its shape, causing it to let go of the operator. ​The Green Light: With the roadblock removed and glucose levels low (which triggers the CAP "accelerator"), RNA polymerase can finally move down the DNA strand. ​The Outcome: The cell produces enzymes like \beta-galactosidase to break down lactose into usable energy. ​Why it Matters ​The lac operon is a perfect example of dual regulation. The primary mode of attack in the game is done by launching birds with a slingshot. Once released, most of the birds follow projectile motion, which is why the meme replaces the projectiles with birds. There are some exceptions. While most birds follow simple projectile motion, with no air resistance and a constant downward acceleration; some birds like chuck, the blues and stella do not. Chuck can accelerate in the direction of motion if clicked on midflight. This makes him move much further. The blues can split into 3 seperate projectiles, with one following the original trajectory, one gaining positive vertical velocity and one gains a negetive vertical velocity. Let’s break it down 👇 🧪 Structure matters. A lot. Each phospholipid has: • A hydrophilic (water-loving) head • Two hydrophobic (water-hating) tails So the membrane forms like this: ✔ Heads face the watery environments (inside & outside the cell) ✔ Tails hide inside, forming a non-polar, oily core 👉 Result? A flexible yet highly selective barrier 🚫 So why can’t everything just pass through? 1️⃣ The Oily Barrier Effect The core of the membrane is hydrophobic. ➡️ Water-soluble (polar/charged) molecules get repelled here. Think: trying to mix oil and water. 2️⃣ Tight Packing = No Space Phospholipids are packed closely together. ➡️ Large molecules like glucose or proteins simply don’t fit through. 3️⃣ Ions Face an Energy Wall Ions (Na⁺, K⁺, Cl⁻) carry a hydration shell (water molecules around them). ➡️ To enter the membrane, they’d need to shed this shell ➡️ That requires huge energy → so they’re blocked 💡 The Big Insight: The membrane isn’t just a boundary… It’s a gatekeeper of cellular life ✔ Small, non-polar molecules → pass easily ✔ Large, polar, or charged molecules → need transport proteins 🧠 Understanding this is the foundation of: • Drug delivery • Cell signaling • Transport mechanisms (channels, carriers, pumps) 🔁 Next time someone says “just diffusion,” remember: 👉 The membrane decides what gets in… not the molecule.
