Secure their attention! 🙌 I’m gearing up for three trips this fall back to Queens, NY, and I can’t wait to see these 3rd graders again at @ps152q ! When I modeled this in January, this was a newer type of lesson for this group. You’ll notice high response frequency with a focus on being successful. Motivation comes from feeling like we are able to do something. This year, I’ll be working solely with 3rd graders at @ps152q to appropriately structure their literacy block in response to initial screener data. See you in two weeks, Queens! • • • #teachersofinstagram #teachersfollowteachers #iteach #teachingreading #igteachers #teachersofig #kids #education #scienceofreading #teachertips #iteach123 #dyslexia #reading #readingteacher #scienceoflearning #learning #reel #video #vid #reelstagram

As a reading specialist, I’ve never forced my kids to silently read for 20 minutes just to fill out a homework log. It’s even more cringe to my kids than watching their mom dance in this reel. 😭 Here’s why—and what I do instead: Silent reading logs often turn joyful reading into a battleground. They can create power struggles, zap motivation, and worst of all… They don’t actually teach kids how to read! Research shows that independent silent reading alone doesn’t improve decoding, fluency, or comprehension skills for our young or struggling readers. So why do we keep assigning it like it’s the golden ticket? 🎟️ 🤩Here’s what I do instead to build real reading skills…and a love of books: • Enjoy a bedtime read-aloud together (yes, it counts! Jot it down in that log). • Let them use tools like Learning Ally or Libby for “read to me” access (it is NOT cheating). • Try effective apps like EBLI Space, Hairy Phonics, or Reading.com. Build actual skills - bonus points for sitting down and doing it with your child. • Follow their interests—comics, graphic novels, magazines (we love Ranger Rick,Aquila, & The Phoenix) or podcasts with fun facts? YES 🙌 . • Explore a topic they’re curious about and dive into books, articles or a few short passages together (check out ReadWorks). • Take a high-quality tutoring class that actually teaches the how of reading. 🙋🏻‍♀️ Reading should never feel like a punishment. If we build the skills now, the love and enjoyment needed for sustained silent reading will come, trust me!!! Let’s stop logging minutes and start building minds and motivation. ❤️ Like this if you’re ready to ditch nightly reading battles. ✅Save this for later for some good ideas and pointers to share with others! 📲 Follow for real talk about reading and research-backed strategies that work. #readingtips #literacymatters #parentingtips #scienceofreading #readingsupport #readingskills #readinghelp #earlyliteracy #learnwithalyssa #readinglogsaredeath #homeworkhelp

EASY and FUN!!! 🥳🤩 This is a super easy way to practice any phonics skill! It gets your kids both reading and writing words! Word chains are when you change one sound of a word to create a new word! Quick tip: it’s totally fine for your kids to make nonsense words!! The goal of this game is to practice hearing sounds, spelling sounds and reading sounds so if they switch big to bip, that’s totally cool! 😎 You could have your kids change just the first sound, the last sound, the middle sound, or any sound they want! This is a little glimpse the reading intervention that I do with small groups. Every single day I work with one to two groups that need EXTRA reading support. My biggest goal is to bridge that reading gap so that all of my students leave my class reading proficiently. I start out each lesson using PhonicsQ flashcards to review the sounds we’ve previously learnt and (introduce a new sound if they are ready). Then I move into word chains as you see in this video. After that I do some spelling dictation, phonemic awareness, reading and/or a phonics game. Lots of the time I have to split up what I teach in a small group lesson throughout the week because sometimes I only have 10ish minutes! These flashcards are from PhonicsQ! You can order their products right now for 10% off using my code KAG ! Quick #TryEBLI Update 💙 After about 22 work sessions and Track 3, Activity 29, I had students do an informal Handwriting Check. We had just finished the <a> sort (Same Spelling, Different Sound), and we had 5 minutes before the bell. I thought it would be perfect for a quick alphabet-writing practice and then timed writing. Here’s how it went ^^^^ #readingteacher #readingintervention #soundtoprint #teachreading #scienceofreading

JOY! 🤩 Since September, I’ve had my PreK team follow the @ufliteracy Foundations scope and sequence. I also ordered the fabulous @wilsonlanguagetraining PreK Kits so we could have engaging, consistent materials across the board. We have to remember that the awareness of print carrying meaning is something we must explicitly model and teach. I’m so proud of this PreK friend! • • • • #teachersofinstagram #teachersfollowteachers #iteach #teachingreading #igteachers #teachersofig #kids #education #scienceofreading #teachertips #iteach123 #kindergarten #skills #reading #fyp #read #teacherpd #literacy #teacher #song #reels #reel #video #morning #prek #preschool

Ever wonder what a reading specialist actually does all day? 👇📚 I work almost exclusively in small groups, focusing on literacy intervention, which means I get to go deep into one subject while still teaching a wide range of skills throughout the day. Most groups are just 30 minutes, so every lesson has to be intentional. We target exactly what students need most to make the biggest impact in a short amount of time. And no 2 groups look the same: • Targeted phonics instruction • Fluency practice • Spelling + written responses • Comprehension strategies • Vocabulary development Same subject. Totally different needs. Never boring. And today’s highlight? A surprise visit from a local therapy dog 🐶 Let’s just say engagement (for students and adults) was at an all-time high. Would you rather teach one subject all day or a little bit of everything? Tell me below 👇✨ Tag a reading specialist friend! Or someone who should be one! ✨📚 #readingspecialist #literacyintervention #smallgroupinstruction #scienceofreading #phonicsinstruction
