If high-income office workers lose jobs at scale, the damage spreads far beyond employment. These are the borrowers banks treat as safest, the ones holding mortgages, stocks, and strong credit.
Once that income disappears, the chain reaction begins. People sell investments, miss mortgage payments, and are forced to sell homes. The "safe" borrowers the system depends on suddenly become the risk.
