Marvin Gaye’s 1976 hit I Want You is a soulful tune about intense romantic desire, yearning, and the need for reciprocal love. It captures the desperate pursuit of a passionate connection largely inspired by his obsession with and love for Janis Hunter
Released on March 16, 1976, Marvin Gaye’s I Want You marked a shift toward disco-soul and funk. Produced by Leon Ware, the album features sensual, intimate themes.
Before he was the Prince of Motown this Washington, DC native played drums for Motown sessions, including for artists like The Supremes, Stevie Wonder, and The Marvelettes.
Marvin’s real last name was Gay. He added the “e” to distinguish himself from his abusive father, Marvin Gay Sr.
At age 31, during a deep depression following the death of his duet partner Tammi Terrell, Marvin tried to quit music to become a professional football player. He trained to become a wide receiver for the Detroit Lions and even got a tryout, but was rejected by coach Joe Schmidt.
He felt guilty about the careers of his duet partners. Mary Wells and Kim Weston both left Motown after working with him, and his most famous partner, Tammi Terrell, died young from a brain tumor.
In the early 1980s, he moved to Ostend, Belgium to escape the IRS and his drug addiction, where he eventually produced his Grammy-winning comeback hit Sexual Healing.
He won two Grammys in 1982 for Sexual Healing - was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

BUHere’s the full live video for my version of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On?” 💫 When I strolled into the studio with @butchermusic to track I wasn’t exactly sure if this was the song I should be doing. I had gone back and forth a lot about what covers should be on the upcoming album. Something classic New Orleans? Something recent? Something meaningful or political? We did a quick sound check and then settled in and cranked out this version in 2 takes. Then it hit. It felt like this was the right decision… and Butcher’s encouraging words reassured me! It feels relevant to New Orleans. It certainly is relevant to now, even though it was written in ‘71, and singing it fills me with fiery passion to fight for the right thing. I hope it moves you too! Enjoy! 💞
