PAThe Hidden Passenger
The midday rush at Terminal 3 was reaching its peak. Budi, a security officer known for his sharp eyes, was monitoring the X-ray scanner when a peculiar shape caught his attention. Inside a heavy, designer leather duffel bag belonging to a well-dressed woman, he saw the unmistakable skeletal outline of a small animal.
"Ma'am, I need you to open this bag immediately," Budi said, his voice firm but professional.
The woman rolled her eyes, sighing with annoyance. "It’s just clothes and souvenirs. I’m in a hurry for my flight."
Budi didn't flinch. "Open it, please."
As the zipper retreated, a wave of heat escaped the bag. Tucked beneath a pile of heavy sweaters was a golden retriever puppy. The poor creature was limp, its golden fur damp with sweat, and its breathing was shallow and ragged. The bag had no ventilation holes; it was a miracle the puppy was still alive.
A Heartless Act
The woman didn't look remorseful. "I didn't want to pay the pet transport fee," she muttered, crossing her arms. "It’s just a dog."
Budi felt a flash of anger but remained focused. He gently lifted the puppy out. The little golden retriever was so weak it couldn't even lift its head. Its pink tongue hung out, dry and pale.
"This isn't just a dog, Ma'am," Budi replied quietly. "This is a life you nearly extinguished."
The Rescue
Budi signaled for his colleagues to detain the woman for questioning and animal cruelty charges. He rushed the puppy to the cool floor of the security office, offering small drops of water from his bottle. After a few tense minutes, the puppy’s tail gave a tiny, involuntary twitch. It let out a faint, shaky whimper and finally opened its cloudy eyes, looking up at Budi.
By the time the local vet arrived, the puppy—whom the staff had already nicknamed "Goldie"—was resting its head on Budi's boot, finally safe from the dark, suffocating bag.
