CIWe’ve been highlighting the amazing work of local crossing guards this August for #BackToSchoolMonth. Thank you to our amazing Crossing Guards for helping our #Lancaster students navigate school streets safely! We especially want to thank Michelle Siffleet for her service at Nancy Cory Elementary School. ⭐️ Michelle and the Nancy Cory community have a tight bond! When she was diagnosed with cancer three years ago, students and staff rallied around her in support. PO#Ad Until I hit my forties, there were so many ageist narratives I believed, and ones that still take time to unravel as I get older. From how I look, what I should wear, what sports I should try to wondering if I’m too old to try something new.
Ageism is everywhere - it’s practically sewn into the fabric of our society from the language we use to the representations of older people on TV, film, magazines and adverts - and it isn’t just about discrimination and prejudice that older people face. It’s also about the beliefs that we turn back towards ourselves, which can be hugely self-limiting.
I wish I had known that being told you look young for your age wasn’t a compliment. (Just tell me I look great, without the need to justify why). I wish I had known that I can keep getting physically stronger and stronger (health withstanding). That there’s no age limit on when you try things like diving, martial arts. That getting older and feeling desire and love for your own body are not opposing concepts. That’s why I’ve decided to support the Age Without Limits campaign @agewithoutlimitsorg from the Centre for Ageing Better @ageing_better - a brilliant initiative that asks us to consider what ageist beliefs we might hold, what might be holding us back and how to dismantle it.
It’s something I feel so passionately about because there are many amazing things that come with getting older, which we aren’t told about. It’s a time of confidence, liberation, fearlessness, and adventure - basically caring less about what other people think, and doing what we want. When we centre THAT instead of fear-driven things like frailty and shrinking of the self, doesn’t that then make ageing something to look forward to?
I am not going to hold myself back or fall into out-dated expectations. Age Without Limits are celebrating positive portrayals of ageing with their Challenging Ageism – See and Be Seen exhibition in March check out their socials to #SeeAndBeSeen
