Dear Father: Yesterday, Mum and I were eating lunch at the waterfront before we boarded a boat to Robben Island, ie the prison that held Mandela for 18 of his 27 year sentence. We’re sitting there long enough for a catamaran to go out and return, at which point Mum observed, “I’ve never been on a catamaran…” Me: What?! So we did Robben Island—you know, until 1979, they served different food portions based on race and the criminals ate better than the political prisoners?! And the political prisoners didn’t get beds and relived themselves in buckets?!? After, we went shopping at the pier and THEN did a rooftop restaurant with views of the city lights in the mountainside. This morning, we woke up late. And this afternoon, Mum got on her first catamaran. I got her to sit in the front of the boat, but she outright refused to go on the net and catch a 360 breeze. She said there was nothing to hold on to. Eventually, I convinced her to take off her shoes and put her name feet on the net. Progress in baby steps. I tried to get Mum to stand for a pic with Table Mountain in the background (she refused to go up the mountain, citing a newfound fear of heights.) She said “no”, but did allow a photo. She looks kinda terrified, but she is fine. I swear. Allegedly, there were whales and seals and dolphins (oh my!) swimming in the water today. I saw half a seal. (I saw several hanging out on the pier when we returned from Robben Island yesterday.) I looked really hard for a whale cause apparently they are in season? But no luck. The good whale sightings are at a place called Hermanus(?!) I would like to go there. After, I fed Mum at my favorite CPT restie— as much for the food as for the views of the mountains and ocean. We almost missed our flight back to Joburg—it left at 7; we got to the airport at 6:10– but we are currently aboard a plane. Dear Mum: The views— and tech— in Doha are jaw dropping. For a place with ancient history— the museums have a bunch of artifacts from like 10-12th century— they are living in the future. It’s the best of everything and the whole city is clean like any Black household in the diaspora on Saturday by noon. Also, they use some kind of industrial strength Windex (or equivalent) here. The glass is so clean, you don’t even see it. Sooooo many times I’ve almost hit my hand reaching for something or nearly busted my face about to walk thru a floor-to-ceiling window. The money here is LONGGGGG (thanks to oil and natural gas). The architecture is like something out of The Jetsons. And it’s a ton of Black people here, mostly from East Africa (since it’s right there). I made it to the Valentino exhibit, as promised. After @therealruthecarter showing at @scadfash, it’s the best fashion exhibit I have ever seen. I openly wept at the beauty of it all. I’ll send pics tomorrow. I’m 8 hours ahead of the East Coast and currently in bed. My flight got in at 5:30AM. It is winter here, ie, the temperature peaks at 75 and goes down to 65. There is a breeze. People are walking around in full coats. Will met me here around 7AM and we headed to the museums— 4 today— sans a nap. My health app says we walked 5.5 miles. I have seen so much silk and taffeta, and emeralds, and rubies and diamonds! Oh, my! I have been fed (sushi). I am going to sleep now. I didn’t upgrade my seat on the 7 hour flight over and am stiff AF. I’m going to the steam room before breakfast, and after I work out. Then we are headed to the souks for gold and the malls for shopping. Apparently, I need an American autumn wardrobe for summer in South Africa. Everywhere in Africa ain’t “Africa hot.” Breezy, braided, and blessed, The Demi #seesomeworld #outofAfrica
